Giants' promotional schedule includes clear shot at Dodgers' 2020 World Series

The Giants decided to spend money on 15,000 Mickey Mouse ears rather than improve their roster.

The San Francisco Giants must be having a tough time selling their product. And who could blame them? It's not as if Farhan Zaidi and the front office have done much to help bolster the roster this offseason.

But this latest stunt is just another attempt to get wins in the world of social media while taking Ls on the field. When the Los Angeles Dodgers take the trip up north to play their bitter rival on June 30th, the ushers at Oracle Park will be passing out Mickey Mouse ears as a promotional giveaway to all the Giants' fans in attendance.

Of course, this can easily be read as a tongue-in-cheek jab at the Dodgers' 2020 World Championship run that many fans and pundits refer to as a Mickey Mouse World Series. The term "Mickey Mouse" is often used as an insult when referencing something that has little value. Since the 2020 season was cut short because of the coronavirus pandemic, some baseball fans think that year's World Series shouldn't count.

While the pandemic-shortened 2020 season was quite different than most years, every team played a 60-game schedule. Perhaps the Giants are a little upset at the fact that, despite the expanded postseason format, San Fran still couldn't record enough wins that year to make it into the 16-team playoff.

The Dodgers had the best record in baseball that year, going 43-17, and met the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series. It just so happens that the Rays had the second-best record in Major League Baseball during the 2020 season, so it's safe to assume that the two best clubs from that obscure year played for the Commissioner's Trophy in October.

Don't forget that there were no home games during that year's playoff run, and there weren't any fans in the stands, either. Several teams had to battle through bouts of illness and a number of travel restrictions as well, so one could easily make the argument that the path, while abbreviated, wasn't a cake walk.

But Dodgers fans know that this all comes from a place of jealousy. The Giants failed to sign Shohei Ohtani this offseason, and their efforts to ink Yoshinobu Yamamoto fell short as well. LA is well on their way to having the best team in the majors next season while Giants fans will be left to cheer for a Mickey Mouse franchise.
