The Commish Not Worried About Dodgers’ Future

Welcome everyone to a new era here at Lasorda’s Lair! We’ll be talking Dodger baseball all the time, and hopefully that doesn’t include talking about the Dodgers’ third straight postseason loss to the Phillies next season. But, enough bitterness towards the past. Let’s look ahead.

One story that has some Dodger fans concerned is that of the divorce of Frank McCourt and Jamie McCourt. Some fans think that this could cause huge problems in terms of spending and could cause some off-season chaos overall, in what could be a very important winter for this team.

However, a Los Angeles Times story this morning has some quotes from MLB commissioner Bud Selig, and he doesn’t seem too concerned. Which forces me to ask the question: Should I be concerned?

I honestly don’t think I should be. If the Dodgers weren’t planning to up their payroll for this upcoming season anyways, I don’t really see this divorce playing a huge factor overall. Yes, it will be something that will impact those directly involved (Frank and Jamie), but I don’t think it impact those not directly involved (Ned Colletti and Joe Torre).

Now don’t get me wrong, if things start to get crazier and crazier in this divorce, then we could have some problems. If McCourt is no longer the owner, and the Dodgers have to find someone else to come in, then everything is up for grabs. That’s when we start questioning everything that is going to happen. But at this point, that’s just a fear. It’s not the current reality. If we get to that point, then I’ll become concerned.

The Dodgers don’t have a ton of holes on this current roster, though if there is one thing that I will plead for this offseason, it will be pitching. There’s no doubt that this team has to improve the bullpen, and the pitching staff overall has to get better.

So Dodger fans that are worried that somehow the payroll will shrink significantly, or that the Dodgers won’t get the type of help they need in the offseason, just calm down a little bit. I do understand the concerns, since we’ve seen these types of things happen before, and then everything goes downhill for an organization. But there’s too many good pieces in place for this team to completely fold and become the new doormat of the league. That’s simply not going to happen.

Everything will be fine, and it should be a pretty interesting offseason as we’ll see what types of moves are made to this current roster.
