According to reports on the blog Bronx Baseball Daily, the Dodgers and Yankees were on the verge of completing a trade. The Los Angeles Dodgers would receive Yankees Catcher Francisco Cervelli. On the other hand, the Yankees would’ve received catcher Russell Martin.
Martin who batted .248 with 5 homeruns and 26 RBIS last season would’ve been competing for the starting catcher’s job for the Yankees. (Jorge Posada is now their full time DH)
Francisco Cervelli, who has one career homerun in two seasons at the big league level, is the Yankees backup catcher. Last season he batted .271 with 38 RBIS as Jorge Posada’s backup.
If the Dodgers did complete this trade, it would’ve been for the good of the team. Cervelli is a smart minded defensive catcher who knows how to handle a pitching staff. As of today however, (according to reports) the deal is presumed to be dead.
