Baseball Runs Deep in Wallach Family, Honored with Ray Boone Family Award

Baseball runs deep in the Wallach family, and because of this, Dodgers third base coach Tim Wallach and his family will be honored with an award at the Professional Baseball Scouts Foundation Banquet at the Hyatt regency century Plaza Hotel. The event on Saturday will present the Wallachs with the Ray Boone Family award. The current third base coach for the Dodgers was an all-star third baseman, went into player development, then became minor league coach, manager, before he became third base coach for the Dodgers under manager Don Mattingly.

Tim and his wife Lori have three sons. All are Baseball players, and all were drafted by the Dodgers. Matt Wallach, the eldest Wallach boy, at 25 years old, is a catcher. He was drafted in the 22nd round in the 2007 draft by the Dodgers. He is healing from a broken pinky suffered in a plate collision, as he plays down in double A Chattanooga. He was one of the prospects to participate in this weeks winter development mini-camp. Kenny wrote about it the other day in this piece about the mini-camp here.

The middle son Brett Wallach is a 23-year old pitcher who was drafted in the third round of the 2009 draft by the Dodgers. However he is no longer with the Dodgers, as he was traded to the Cubs in the Ted Lilly trade back in 2010. The youngest son Chad Wallach is a 20 year old infielder, and was drafted in the 43rd round of 2010. He did not sign though, and is currently the catcher at Cal State Fullerton. The same school his brothers graduated from.

Even The boys Mom was a college softball player, and could hit grounders and catch bullpen sessions. Now that’s a Baseball family! All three Wallach boys hope to make the majors one day, and make their papa Wallach proud. The boys hope to follow in their father’s footsteps who was a solid third sacker for the Dodgers years ago.

The Ray Boone family award is named after the first family to send three generations of players to the major leagues. Ray, son Bob Boone, and grandsons Brett and Aaron were presented with the first award in 2005. Other winners include: the Buvasi family in 2006, Brett family in 2007, Buddy Bell in 2008, The Alou family in 2009, and the Mota family in 2010. Other honors bestowed at the awards ceremony will include the Bud Selig executive leadership award being given to Al Rosen. The Player lifetime achievement award to Frank Robinson. The Tommy Lasorda managerial achievement award to Jim Leyland, and the Scouts Dream award to Johnny Bench.
