Good Article from Ken Gurnick on Dodgers Prospect Scott Van Slyke

Hey guys, I would be remiss in my duties if I did not share a link to a good read from the interwebs. Ken Gurnick of mlb.com has an interesting piece on Dodgers prospect Scott Van Slyke. Scott is the son of former major Leaguer Andy Van Slyke. He is also one of the Dodgers top prospects, after winning the Dodgers minor league position player of the year award. Scott Van Slyke was drafted by the Dodgers in the 14th round of the 2005 amateur draft. Van Slyke is originally from St. Louis and is 25 years old. He is a right handed hitter, and he stands at 6’5 and 195 pounds. Scott is very different from his father, who was a center fielder with the Pirates that was more known for getting on base and stealing bases. Van Slyke is primarily a first baseman, but he can also play the outfield. He played games at first base and left and right field for Chattanooga in 2011.

Scott has played for Ogden, Great Lakes, Inland Empire, Chattanooga, and the Albuquerque Isotopes. Last season for Chattanooga he batted .348 with 20 home runs and 92 RBI in 130 games played. His OBP was .427, and he had 65 walks, and struck out 100 times. Gurnick goes on to talk about Van Slyke’s struggles advancing up through the Dodger’s farm system, his instruction under Franklin Stubbs, and his recent successful 2011 season. Scott is ranked as one of the Dodger’s top position player prospects, and could be a player to watch for 2013 and beyond. He also participated in the recent winter development mini-camp.
