Minor League Memorandum

While the Dodgers have a day off before the home opener festivities begin tomorrow, let’s take a look around the minors. While we’ve been enjoying the Dodgers’ new season, the minor league affiliates have began their seasons as well.

 

Ogden Raptors (Rookie)-

The Raptors will begin their season June 18th. Their season runs through September 6th, 2012.

Great Lakes Loons (Low A)-

The Great Lakes Loons are 0-3 after completing their three-game opening series with the Lansing Lugnuts. Today they are playing their home opener at Dow Diamond. They will play a three-game set vs. the Lake County Captains.

Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (High A)-

The Quakes have started the season 1-3 after losing a four-game series to the Inland Empire 66ers. Zach Lee started the Opening Day game, and the #1 prospect pitched 5 innings. He allowed 1 hit, no runs, 1 walk, and 5 strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision. On Saturday, the Quakes won their first game of the season with a score of 5-4. Garrett Gould started, and he pitched 5 innings allowing 7 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts. Logan Bawcom picked up the save by pitching two scoreless innings and whiffing three batters. Second baseman Tyler Hensen had two hits and two RBI including a homerun. Sunday Ted Lilly made a rehab start for the Quakes, and received the loss. He pitched 6 innings, allowing 8 hits (2 homeruns), 7 runs, no walks, and 2 strikeouts. It’s unclear whether Lilly will be ready for his next scheduled start with the Dodgers, but we will keep you updated. The Quakes will go on to play Lancaster in a three-game series.

Chattanooga Lookouts (AA)-

The Chattanooga Lookouts have a 1-3 record after playing four games of a five-game series with the Tennessee Smokies at their home park of AT&T Field. Allen Webster started for Chattanooga on Opening Day last Thursday, and took the loss after pitching 3.1 innings and allowing 7 hits, 2 runs, 5 walks, and 2 strikeouts on 76 pitches. Ethan Martin pitched the second game, and only allowed 3 hits in 4.2 innings pitched. The Lookouts were shut out by the Smokies 1-0. The Lookouts picked up their first win of the season in game 3 with a score of 10-2 against Tennessee. Chattanooga had 16 hits. Center Fielder Nick Buss, first baseman J.T. Wise, and left fielder Kyle Russell all had 3 hits. The Lookouts dropped game 4, but right-hander Matt Magill pitched 5 scoreless and hitless innings. Tonight the concluding fifth game will be played before the Lookouts go on the road to play five games against Jackson.

Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA)-

The Isotopes have a 1-3 record to start their season. They lost a four-game series against the Omaha Storm Chasers. In game one Scott Van Slyke had two hits including a solo homerun in the eighth inning, but the ‘Topes still lost 8-4. Michael Antonini started game two for the Isotopes, and pitched 5 innings allowing 4 hits, 1 run, no walks, and 2 strikeouts. Will Savage, Wil Ledezma, and Scott Rice (who got the save) all pitched in relief. Alex Castellanos, Van Slyke, Josh Fields, FedEx, and Luis Cruz all had a multi-hit game with Van Slyke and FedEx each hitting a homerun. Albuquerque beat Omaha with a score of 5-2. Stephen Fife lost in game three, and Fernando Nieve picked up the loss in game four. The Isotopes did score 11 runs in game four, but Omaha outpaced them by scoring 17. Van Slyke hit his third homerun of the young season, and Jerry Sands even hit a homerun. In 18 at bats so far this season, Sands is hitting .111 with two hits (including that homerun), 1 walk, and 6 strikeouts. Still on the road, the Isotopes begin a four-game series with the Iowa Cubs.
