Do Birds of a Feather Flock Together? Dodgers On Verge of Deal With Birdman Zack Greinke

Wooo hoo! This just broke about an hour ago. Woo hoo!!!! According to this tweet from Dylan Hernandez,

The Dodgers are on the verge of signing birdman Zack Greinke. Apparently the deal would be for six years and 145 million dollars. Excuse me while I wooohoooo!!!!! It’s on now!

Anyways, it appeared that the Rangers had retaken the lead in the Birdman sweepstakes. After Greinke had met with Ranger’s brass, we heard he was impressed with the Ranger’s ownership, and commitment to winning. His wife was a Dallas Cowboy cheerleader or something, and there was reason to think he was going to sign with Texas. We had thought that the deal might not happen, urged the Dodgers to move on and had considered other options. But that’s why the winter is full of unexpected twists.

Looks like Greinke will be pitching under the beautiful skies of Dodger Stadium after all.- Jim Cowsert-USA TODAY Sports

It’s about dam time I say. We had been waiting and waiting for this. Finally it appears to be happening. The GBN is building a championship caliber roster piece by piece. The goal is to have all-stars at every position and a world class rotation, anchored by two Cy Young award winners.

Once news breaks like this it generally means it’s going to happen. Of course the deal isn’t finalized yet, and we can’t count are chickens before they hatch, but it’s not looking pretty good. The contract would the richest for a pitcher in Baseball history. It would Trump the piddly contract Matt Cain received from the Giants. (I kid of course, but seriously).

There had been three teams originally considered Birdman’s top suitors during the recruitment phase The Dodgers, Rangers, and Angels were all trying desperately to sign him. The Angels had dropped out a couple of weeks ago after they traded for Tommy Hanson, and signed Joe Blanton. (ha!)

Adding the 209 cy young award winner immediately improves the rotation. We now would have a real actual number two, a second ace to slot behind Clayton Kershaw, which is what the Dodgers have been wanting for a long time now. There is some concern that the Dodgers might have to pay a penalty for going over the luxury tax since their payroll should be well above 200 million dollars. But seriously who cares? Remember the GBM controls billions of dollars in assets already, and with the new t.v. deal potentially bringing in over six billion dollars in revenue, the Dodgers are swimming in cash right now.

Birdman split the 2012 season between the Brewers and the Angels. He finished with a 15-5 record, 3.48 ERA, 200 whiffs and 54 walks in 212.2 innings pitched.  The deal isn’t final yet, but we expect an announcement soon or next week, and we will keep you updated on all of the details on the Birdman deal. Until then, it’s time to go out and celebrate. Do birds of a feather flock together? For 145 million dollars they do! Better luck next time Texas! Don’t mess with Los Angeles! I seriously can’t wait for the 2013 season to start.
