Dodgers Sign 16-Year Old Dominican Outfielder Michael Medina

The Dodgers continue to stock up on international players, and have once again signed another player from outside the United States. This time they have reportedly signed 16 year old Dominican outfielder Michael Medina to a 275,000 dollar contract. Medina is from Santo Domingo, bats right handed, and is 6’2 and 185 pounds. Medina played in the international prospect league all-star game last week.

According to Ben Badler of Baseball America, Medina has a projectable frame, with good power from the right side. He has good bat speed, and has the ability to hit the ball to the opposite field. Badler reports that he sees him as a corner outfielder, and he has a strong arm to boot.

Medina was one of the youngest players eligible to sign, after just turning 16 last August 24th Apparently if he was a week younger, he would have had to wait until July 2 to sign. If you remember the Dodgers also signed another Dominican outfielder named Ariel Sandoval to a 150,000 dollar contract. The signing bonus given to Medina is supposedly larger than the one given to Ariel Sandoval. The reported 275,000 dollar contract counts against the Dodger’s international spending cap of 2.9 million dollars. During which the signing period is June 15th though July 2nd.
