Dodgers Make More Cuts as Season Quickly Approaches

The Dodgers made a third round of cuts on Tuesday which pares down the players in Major League camp to 48. Brian Barden, Omar Luna, and Jeremy Moore were reassigned to Minor League camp. All three were non-roster invitees. Luna and Barden were not expected to have any chance at making the big club, but I was a bit surprised that the Dodgers sent Jeremy Moore to the Minor League side so soon.

With World Baseball Classic participants returning to Spring Camp, the Dodgers now have more than enough infielders in order to make appropriate cuts as needed.

Brian Barden, third base, was hitting .478 through 13 games this Spring. Luis Cruz, who has returned from participating (and fighting) in the World Baseball Classic, should be slotted for third base for most of the remainder of the Spring since the Dodgers have said he will be their Opening Day starter at the hot corner.

Omar Luna, a second baseman, was hitting .313 over the course of 11 games. With Mark Ellis at second, Luna will most likely find a place in the Dodgers’ Minor League system for 2013.

Jeremy Moore, outfielder, used to be a top prospect for the Angels before he succumbed to hip labrum surgery. Moore was batting .333 in 13 games this Spring with 5 doubles, 4 RBI, and a stolen base. Moore has good speed, and I thought he could have filled the need for a fourth outfielder on the team. It seems as though Moore may need some more work in order to transition back after his hip surgery. He also has been outshined by the Spring spectacular show put on by Dodger prospect Yasiel Puig.
