Dodgers Place Bills On DL (Elbow Again), Stephen Fife Recalled

Very early this morning, like before I even had a chance to have my cup of coffee, and of course before we had a chance to edit our pregame post which was written last night. The Dodgers announced they have placed Chad Billingsley on the 15-day DL with elbow pain. (retroactive to April 16) Yes it appears to be the same injury that killed his season last year. It is very possible that Bills may not return this year. Keep in mind, we don’t know the severity of the pain in his elbow yet. I am just making an assumption based on his injury history. This doesn’t look good.

Right hander Stephen Fife was recalled, and will start in his place in the final game of the three game series against Baltimore. There is nothing much else the Dodgers can do about this. Billingsley was only able to make two starts this season after spending the first ten days of the season on the DL with a bruised middle finger. Billingsley had a relatively quiet spring before injuring his finger on a bunting drill. That was the reason he started the year on the DL, not his elbow.

The bad news for the Dodgers continues, as Bills heads back to the DL-Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Billingsley has pitched only 12 innings so far this season. He is 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA, five walks, and six whiffs. Billingsley suffered a torn ligament in his elbow last summer, but chose to not have surgery. Instead electing to have a series of platelet-rich injections, and rest. We already knew coming into this season that Billingsley’s elbow could snap at any moment, and it appears it has.

The Dodger’s rotation is now Clayton Kershaw, Hyun-jin Ryu, Josh Beckett, Ted Lilly, and Stephen Fife, and now they have no more pitchers.

The Dodgers have already lost Zack Greinke, and Chris Capuano to injuries, and traded Aaron Harang. Stephen Fife made five starts for the Dodgers last season, posting an 0-2 record, and a 2.70 ERA.
