Dodgers Begin Series In The Lion’s Den With Full Squad

The next leg of the Dodger road-trip has them flying into the lion’s den of San Francisco to face the last place Giants. (I still snicker and giggle when I write that)The Dodgers fresh off of their series win at Colorado, come into the San Francisco series having won 10 of their last 12 games. Of course the Dodgers could have swept the Rockies yesterday. The Dodgers lost the final game of the series with Colorado 9-5.
Of course that game was winnable yesterday, had subpar manager Don Mattingly not brought in the worst pitcher in Baseball, Brandon League to spectacularly fail for the hundredth time. It’s time to rip up that horrible contract. I won’t get into this again, but it’s obvious Mattingly is just a horribly below average manager. The Dodgers win in spite of him. Oh well, I guess you can’t win them all, when League is pitching anyways.

The Dodgers should be at full strength for the start of tonight’s series. Carl Crawford is due to rejoin the team tonight, and as a result, we should see the Dodgers make a corresponding roster move to clear room for Crawford. The obvious choice would be Scott Van Slyke, since he is one of the last remaining players with options. We should have a decision by this afternoon. Crawford has been recovering from a strained hamstring, and is batting .301 with five home runs.
The pitching match-up will see Hyun-jin Ryu countering the Giant’s Matt Cain.
Ryu is having a very solid season for the Dodgers. Ryu is 6-3 with a 2.83 ERA. He has whiffed 87 and walked only 34 in over 105 innings. Ryu has faced the Giants twice this season, two times ending in defeat, and once in a no-decision. Ryu’s first major league start came against the Giants back on April 2. In that game he allowed three runs on 11 hits through six innings, but lost 3-0. On May 5, the Dodgers gave him no run support again in a loss at San Francisco. In that start, he allowed four runs on eight hits in six frames, in a 4-3 loss. Finally Ryu’s third start versus the Giants came back on June 24, at Dodger Stadium. Ryu pitched into the seventh inning in that game, allowing just one run on eight hits. He wasn’t involved in the decision, but the Dodgers did win that game 3-1.
Ryu was pretty dominant in his last start against Philadelphia that saw him throw seven innings of two-run ball while whiffing six. Ryu unfortunately received another no-decision. Here’s how Ryu has fared against the Giant’s hitters. Ryu has had issues in the past containing the Giant’s super aggressive making contact style of hitting. Note they are still without injured Angel Pagan.

The struggling Giants will counter with their ace, right hander Matt Cain. The 28 year old right hander has been having a down year in 2013. Cain is 5-4 this year with a 4.29 ERA. Cain’s peripheral numbers look similar. He has allowed just 7.2 hits per nine which is on pace with his career norm. He has whiffed 101 and walked only 30 in 109 innings. What the problem seems to be with Cain is he is just allowing too many home runs. Cain has allowed 16 home runs this season. His career average is 0.8, but this year’s long ball average is 1.3. Cain only allowed 21 home runs all of last year.

Cain has faced the Dodgers twice this season. He has one no-decision back on April 2nd, and one win on May 5th, in San Francisco. Cain is 5-8 against the Dodgers with a 3.17 ERA in 25 starts. All time Cain is 50-40 at Phony Book Park.
Andre Ethier, and Adrian Gonzalez have been big boppers against Cain in past meetings. Hanley has a 15 game hitting streak that is still intact, which will be put to the test against Cain in tonight’s match. Cain will also have to face Yasiel Puig for the first time. The Giants were rained out last night in Cincinnati, and come home having lost nine of their last ten games, to sink them into last place. The Giants are badly struggling. Doesn’t the Giant’s new home of last place look good on them? Yes it does. The Giants are actually tied with San Diego for the basement. San Diego themselves have lost eight out of ten games. The Dodgers (40-44) sit in third place, three and a half games behind Arizona.
