Vin Scully~I’m Like A Walking Thanksgiving Dinner

The announcement of the return of Vin Scully to the Dodger broadcast booth for a historic 65th season has given us all a big sense of relief. The legendary broadcaster announced he would be returning for another season in 2014 before last Friday night’s game against the Red Sox at Dodger Stadium.

Vinny normally goes year to year and every year we get scared that it may be his last. Would he really retire? Would he walk away from the game, and the team he loves so much? Would he retire? The answer was simply, no, or according to Vin, as long as god, his wife, and his health allowed.

But what would have happened if the Dodgers hadn’t turned their season around with their incredible run? What if the Dodgers were still in last place, or out of the race? Would that have affected Vin’s decision to come back for another year?

That’s a scary question to think about. Thank god, the Dodgers turned it around and we don’t have to ever think about that. The Dodgers are currently 23 games above .500 and in first place in the NL West with a 9.5 game lead. The Dodgers are going to the playoffs, barring some kind of unforeseen calamity, and Vin Scully will be blessing us with another year of his beautiful voice. His sweet dulcet tones have guided us through 64 Dodger seasons. Vin’s voice has become an important part of our lives since Vin graced us with his wonderful voice. “Vinisms have become an irreplaceable part of our vernacular. Phrases like “Let’s get back to this one”, or “marching and chowder societies” have become every day sayings for us now.  I pray the Dodgers can give Vin one more World Series Championship before he retires. Each day Vin blesses us with his beautiful voice is a gift to us all.

On Friday night, Vinny held a special press conference to talk about his decision to return, and how and why he came to that choice. Would Vinny had come back had the Dodgers not turned it around and vaulted into first place with their prolific run? Vin answers that question and talks about some of his Baseball playing days with former President George H. Busch at Fordham University. (Vin was a center fielder apparently, and  had a “good glove, but no hit”) according to the great broadcaster. He talks about how the Dodgers and Baseball still delight him today. He also talks about the friends he’s made with the Club over the years, and why he loves doing what he does.

Unfortunately I was unable to attend Vin’s press conference. But here’s a clip of the presser from the Media room at Dodger Stadium. Vin rarely ever does press conferences like this, so it was very rare. Anytime Vin holds a presser, it could be Vin just talking about Laundry detergent and it would be standing room only. You could sell tickets to a press conference where Vin just talks about the weather and it would sell out in minutes. Scully is a very humble, and unique man.

I wanted you guys to check out some of the presser and feel like you were in the room with Vin and the rest of the media. We can all breathe easy knowing that we have another whole season of Vin Scully to look forward to, no matter how the Dodger’s 2013 season turns out in the end. Let’s just hope the Dodgers can get that World Series ring for Vin before he leaves. Hopefully that’s not for a very, very long time. Thank you Mr. Scully, and here’s to 64 unforgettable seasons.
