Dodgers Walk-Off With Win; Hanley Walks Off Field With Injury

The Dodgers walked off with another extra inning win on Thursday night versus their rivals at a packed Dodger Stadium. Adrian Gonzalez drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning after Carl Crawford managed to single on a ball in the dirt from Jeremy Affeldt. The Dodgers picked up their 86th win and decrease their *Magic Number to 5*. The D-backs were idle tonight.

save in the ninth inning thanks to a passed ball by Tim Federowicz. The game began as a pitcher’s duel between Greinke and Cain, and each team scored once in the second inning (off a Pence homerun and a throwing error by Matt Cain) but not again until the seventh when the Dodgers took the lead on a Yasiel Puig RBI double. The hated ones evened things up in the ninth inning thanks to three singles hit off Kenley Jansen and the costly passed ball. FedEx does redeem himself a little by throwing out Blanco at second later in the inning.

Hanley Ramirez left the game before the seventh inning started due to a mild left hamstring strain. We hope Hanley is okay, since he is critical in the Dodgers postseason plans. There is also an awkward moment when Mattingly brings in Paco in err when J.P. Howell is the pitcher announced. Paco leaves the field only to return for a later relief appearance.

After a seven-pitch at bat, Juan Uribe makes a nice play at third to just get the annoying Angel Pagan out at first. After a nine-pitch at bat, Marco Scutaro draws a walk. Brandon Belt pops up to Mark Ellis in shallow center field. Buster Posey is greeted with a chorus of boos at Dodger Stadium. Buster hits a little check swing grounder to second to end the inning. Greinke made 23 pitches to retire the side in the top of the first.

Yasiel Puig and Carl Crawford go down quickly in the bottom of the first with a fly out to center and a pop out to center. Hanley Ramirez singles through the infield. Gonzalez flies out to center, and Pagan makes all three outs in the inning.

In the top of the second Hunter Pence hits a line drive just over the short wall in right field. Puig ran far over to try to catch up with the ball, but the ball carries into the stands. 1-0 Giants. Carl Crawford strikes out swinging, and he is Greinke’s first K on the night. Gregor Blanco hits a long single to right. Puig gets it back in quickly to curb him to one base. Cain strikes out to end the frame, but the Giants jump ahead.

Andre Ethier hits a grounder to third which deflects off Pablo Sandoval‘s glove for a single. Uribe pop up to shallow right field, and Marco Scutaro drops the easy fly but throws to second for the force out of Ethier. A.J. Ellis reaches on an error by Matt Cain who throws the ball away into center field after fielding A.J. Ellis’s comebacker. Uribe advances to third on the play. Mark Ellis hits into a force, but Uribe comes home to score on the play to tie it up 1-1. Pablo Sandoval then falls down on a groundball hit by Zack Greinke. The awful defense this inning just goes to show you why the Giants are in last place. Matt Cain then proceeds to walk Puig to load up the bases with two outs. Crawford flies out to Pagan again to end the inning, but the game is all tied up.

out to right, and Belt grounds out to first. Greinke pitches a perfect frame.

Hanley Ramirez strikes out versus Cain to start off the home half of the third. Gonzalez pops out to third. Ethier strikes out. The Dodgers go down in order.

Hunter Pence, who hit that rare homerun as a right-hander off Greinke, strikes out in his second at-bat against Zack in the top of the fourth. Panda draws a two-out walk, but Brandon Crawford flies out.

Uribe hits a groundball single to left field off the first pitch in the bottom of the fourth. A.J. Ellis is badly fooled on a pitch and strikes out. Mark Ellis grounds out, but Uribe advances to second on the play. Greinke strikes out to end the inning.

Pagan singles with two outs in the fifth. Scutaro singles, and the Giants have two on with two out. Belt grounds out to second to end the inning, but Zack Greinke is already up to 94 pitches.

Yasiel Puig flies out to right, and the crowd whoops as Hunter Pence caught up with it.  Crawford and Hanley both ground out, and the Dodgers go down 1-2-3.

Buster Posey strikes out swinging to open the sixth. Pence grounds out, and Sandoval lines out. Greinke sets the pumpkin colored foes down in order.

Cain retires both Gonzo and Dre on groundouts in the bottom of the sixth. Juan Uribe just misses hitting one out over in the left field corner, but Blanco catches up to it for the third out.

Zack Greinke pitched 6 innings with 1 run on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks on 107 pitches.

Don Mattingly will double switch out Hanley Ramirez with Nick Punto and bring in Paco Rodriguez to relieve Greinke. Hanley left the game with mild left hamstring tightness. Then Donnie comes to get Paco, and he leaves the field. The umpires confer, and Paco leaves into the clubhouse. It is a strange scene as Paco storms off into the clubhouse. Vin Scully said the report came in that J.P. Howell was the pitcher announced, so Paco was the wrong pitcher. Hopefully that is the case and he’s not injured. Howell strikes out Brandon Crawford. Blanco singles up the middle, and that is his second hit of the night. Cain is struck out at the plate trying to sacrifice, and A.J. Ellis throws out Blanco trying to take second for a strike ’em out throw ’em out double play!

A.J. Ellis leads off the bottom of the seventh with a flare single to right field. With three catchers on the roster, Dee Gordon will come in and run for A.J. With MEllis at the plate, Gordon steals his 8th base of the season while on the Dodgers. Mark Ellis bunts, and Cain charges the ball but slips. He manages to get Ellis out at first, but Gordon advances to third. Jerry Hairston Jr. strikes out as pinch-hitter. Puig proceeds to double in the gap, and Dee easily comes home to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead! The crowd at Dodger Stadium was rocking.

off the inning with a single to the gap. With Scutaro batting, Pagan steals second. Scutaro walks, and Mattingly will hook Withrow after an uncharacteristic outing. He faced two batters and couldn’t get either out. Mattingly will bring in Paco for the second time, but this time he’ll pitch. Belt sacrifices the runners over with a bunt. Paco then intentionally walks Posey. Mattingly will go to the pen again, and this time Ronald Belisario will come in to face Pence with the bases loaded and one out. Don Mattingly must be a genius, because Beli makes one pitch, and Pence grounds into a inning ending double play! Uribe makes a strong throw to first to get him.

Javier Lopez will pitch the bottom of the eighth for the Giants. Matt Cain pitched 7 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts and a walk on 89 pitches. Gonzo draws a one-out walk. Ethier hits a soft line drive to Scutaro for the second out. Bruce Bochy will go to his bullpen again to face Uribe. Sandy Rosario, a right-hander, will come in. Uribe hits a high fly ball out to center to end the frame.

Kenley Jansen will get the ball in the ninth. Pablo Sandoval leads off with a base hit to center. Pinch-runner Juan Perez will come in for Panda. Perez steals second. With Blanco at bat, a passed ball by FedEx allows Perez to move to third. Blanco singles to center, and the tying run comes in. FedEx gets a bit of revenge as he throws out Blanco attempting to steal second with Hector Sanchez at the plate. Sanchez proceeds to double to right. Francisco Peguero will pinch-run for Sanchez. The inning mercifully comes to an end on a fly out by Pagan. Jansen made 28 pitches in the inning.

FedEx strikes out swinging to lead-off the bottom of the ninth against Santiago Casilla. Mark Ellis singles up the middle. Michael Young hits the ball hard to deep left field, but Blanco snags it up to save an extra base hit. Puig grounds out to second, and we’re heading to extras once again.

Brian Wilson will come in for the top of the tenth to face his former team for the first time as a Dodger. Scutaro pops out to Mark Ellis. Wilson walks Belt. Posey flies out to right field. Posey went 0-for-4 on the night. Pence grounds out, and Wilson takes care of it as he throws him out at first.

Jeremy Affeldt will pitch the bottom of the tenth. Affedlt was just activated from the DL. Crawford manages a single on a low ball. Nick Punto is bunting, and Crawford advances to second.

Late season walk-off wins against the Giants are always fun even if the teams are on polar opposites of the division. Add number 8 walk-off to your list, Scott!

Tomorrow Clayton Kershaw and Madison Bumgarner will clash in game two of the four game series.
