Dodgers Fire Trey Hillman

Today is what’s being called Mattingly-gate. We’re all on pins and needles here, waiting to see if the skipper gets the axe or a new contract. I joke, I joke but seriously, I never dreamed the final postseason presser would be so drama filled. It’s like an episode of general hospital or all my children or something. So I get the email, the usual end of season email for the final press conference at Dodger Stadium. Normally after the season Don Mattingly and GM Ned Colletti speak to the media to discuss the Dodger’s recently completed season. It turned out to be more than that. Much much more.

Mattingly stated that he does not want to return on a one-year contract, and that if the Dodgers don’t offer him a new contract or extension, then he won’t be returning, despite the fact that his option year automatically vested as soon as the Dodgers defeated the Braves in the NLDS. But Mattingly also stated that he wanted all of his coaches to return. Well about that Donnie, funny thing happened on the way to the blown pennant……

I jest, but it looks like the first domino has fallen in king Mattingly’s court. The Dodgers have announced that bench coach Trey Hillman has been fired. I could say he was “let go”, but that’s just a nice way of saying, he done got canned. And I’m not nice. Dude got canned. Hillman was a former manager for the Kansas City Royals, was brought in by Mattingly when he was hired as manager, and has served as Dodger bench coach since 2011.

It is unknown whether the rest of the coaching staff is returning or not. We still don’t even know if Mattingly is returning, but I kind of saw this coming. According to sources, Ned Colletti fired HIllman himself. Possibly for being a Mattingly yes man. Is Donnie Baseball next? The club also fired advanced scout Wade Taylor, who is reportedly Hillman’s close friend.

Hey, I won’t shed a tear. I mean Hillman, Tim Wallach, and Davey Lopes are basically nothing more than bumps on a log. If Mattingly isn’t coming back, then none of these guys will be either. I would assume Mark McGwire would stay, if only because he’s been with the club for just a season. I hope the entire medical staff is next. Please tell me the rest of the medical staff is next. We’ll keep you posted on all of the hot stove firings over here at Lasorda’s Lair.
