Yasiel Puig’s Reckless Driving and Speeding Charges Dropped
Yasiel Puig‘s speeding and reckless driving charges from his arrest in Chattanooga, Tennessee from April have been dropped as reported by The Chattanoogan.
The Dodger outfielder and finalist for the 2013 National League Rookie of the Year Award, was arrested in April while playing for the AA-Chattanooga Lookouts. Puig was charged with driving 97 mph in a 50-mph zone which carried with it a charge of reckless driving as well as speeding.
Puig’s 12 hours of community service were documented by Dodgers’ Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Lon Rosen in the form of a letter in behalf of Puig which was read by presiding Judge David Bales Wednesday morning in Hamilton County General Sessions Court. Puig completed the community outreach work after he was arrested, and according to the letter Puig was actively involved in different charity organizations which made him an “asset” to the community.
Judge Bales cited the reasons why the charges were being dropped are that Puig does not have a prior record, he currently lives out of state, and he is actively participating in community service charity work.
An interpreter was provided to Puig by the court, and he immediately left after he was dismissed.
Yasiel Puig’s immaturity has been in question since his arrest, but it looks like he can put this incident behind him and perhaps drive a little slower now.
While the Judge emphasized that Puig was not getting any special treatment, his court hearing was postponed several times because of his baseball schedule.
Let’s hope that Puig has a non eventful offseason and plays XBOX at home and adheres to the speed limits around Miami where he lives.
Puig is a finalist for the NL Rookie of the Year Award along with Jose Fernandez and Shelby Miller. The winners of the BBWAA awards will be announced starting Monday at 3 p.m. PT. The Jackie Robinson Rookie of the Year Award announcement show will air on Monday, November 11 on the MLB Network.
