Dodgers Announce 2014 Minor League Coaching Staffs

The Dodgers have announced their minor league coaching and managing staffs for the 2014 season. There are some changes as all of the minor league clubs will have a new manager. The triple-A affiliate Albuquerque Isotopes will be managed by former catcher Damon Berryhill. Berryhill takes over for Lorenzo Bundy who was promoted to the Dodgers as the new third base coach.

Berryhill has plenty of experience as a manager. He has five seasons and four playoff appearances under his belt. He started his managerial career as a skipper for the Ranger’s single-A club Bakersfield in 2008, and has a career 269-250 (.518) record as minor league manager. Both of the Isotope’s coaches will be returning for next season. Pitching coach Glenn Dishman will begin his fourth season, and also returning will be hitting coach Franklin Stubbs, who is entering his second season with the Topes, and his sixth with the Dodger organization.

Razor Shines will manage the Double-A Chattanooga Lookouts, P.J. Forbes will manage the single-A Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, Bill Haselman will take over the single-A great Lakes club, and Lee Tinsley will take the helm in Ogden. John Shoemaker rounds out the skippers as he takes the reigns of the Arizona Rookie league Dodgers.

Berryhill takes over as Triple-A Albuquerque manager following five seasons, including four playoff appearances, with Rookie-advanced Ogden. Berryhill, a Laguna Beach native, began his managing career with Texas’ Single-A Bakersfield club in 2008 and has a 269-250 record (.518) as a minor league manager following 10 big league seasons as a catcher with the Cubs (1987-91), Braves (1991-93), Red Sox (1994), Reds (1995) and Giants (1997). The club’s coaches will both return, as pitching coach Glenn Dishman enters his fourth year with Albuquerque (10^th with Dodger organization) and hitting coach Franklin Stubbs will begin his second season with the Isotopes (sixth season with the organization). 

Shines, who managed Single-A Great Lakes last year, will take the helm at Double-A Chattanooga for his 10^th season as a minor league manager. Shines has managed four clubs to the postseason during his career, including two league titles, and has spent three seasons on Major League staffs as a base coach with the White Sox (2007) and Mets (2009-10). Scott Radinsky will serve as the Lookouts’ pitching coach after spending the 2013 season in the same position at Rookie-advanced Ogden. Radinsky pitched in the Majors for 11 seasons, including a stint in Los Angeles from 1996-98. Shawn Wooten joins the Dodger organization as the Lookouts’ hitting coach following four years coaching in the San Diego chain, including two seasons as manager of Single-A Lake Elsinore, one season managing Single-A Fort Wayne and serving as the hitting coach with Short-Season Eugene in 2010 in his coaching debut. Wooten played six Major League seasons with Anaheim (2000-03), Philadelphia (2004) and Boston (2005) as a catcher, first baseman and third baseman.

Forbes will manage Single-A Rancho Cucamonga, after leading the Rookie-level AZL Dodgers to a 34-22 record and an Arizona League Central division title last season. The 2014 season will mark Forbes’ second season in the Dodger organization and 11^th season as a minor league manager following 13 professional seasons as an infielder. Former Dodger Matt Herges is back for a third consecutive campaign as the Quakes’ pitching coach and hitting coach Mike Eylward will begin his first season with Rancho Cucamonga and second with the organization after spending last year as the hitting coach for Single-A Great Lakes. 

Haselman will join the Dodger organization as the Loons’ skipper after piloting the Single-A Inland Empire 66ers in the Angels’ organization in 2012 and 2013. Prior to his stint with the 66ers, Haselman managed Single-A Bakersfield (Texas) in the California League in 2010. The New Jersey native and UCLA product was a first round draft pick of the Rangers (23^rd overall) in 1987 and went on to play 13 big league seasons with the Rangers (1990, 1998, 2000-02), Mariners (1992-94), Red Sox (1995-97, 2003) and Tigers (1998). Haselman hi .259 in 589 career games and following his playing career became the Red Sox first base (2004, 2006) and bullpen (2005) coach. The 47-year-old caught Roger Clemens’ second 20-strikeout performance against the Tigers in 1996. Bill Simas returns for his fourth year in the organization and second season as the Loons’ pitching coach, after his staff paced the Midwest League in strikeouts with 1,113. Hitting coach Johnny Washington is returning for his sixth season as a minor league coach and first with the Loons. Washington was the Single-A Rancho Cucamonga hitting coach in 2012 and 2013.

Rookie-level Ogden will be piloted by Tinsley, who will be making his debut in the Dodger organization after spending the last three seasons as the Cubs’ outfield/baserunning coordinator. The Kentucky native will also serve as the Co-coordinator of Arizona Instruction. Tinsley boasts 13 years of coaching experience, including Major League coaching stints with Arizona and Seattle. That followed a 14-year playing career that included five Major League seasons with Seattle (1993, 1997), Boston (1994-96) and Philadelphia (1996). After signing with the Dodgers as a minor league instructor on June 1, Greg Sabat will take the reins as the Raptors’ pitching coach. Sabat previously served as the pitching coach with the Gulf Coast Tigers in Detroit’s organization for 15 seasons. Hitting coach Leo Garcia is returning for a sixth season in the organization and his second with Ogden in 2014.

Shoemaker will manage the Rookie-level Arizona League Dodgers after serving as the Coordinator of Arizona Instruction last season. Shoemaker has been a player, coach, manager or coordinator in the Dodger organization since 1977, compiling a 1,258-1,230 (.506) managerial record and winning Southern League championships with Double-A Jacksonville in 2001 (co-champions) and 2005 and also a Single-A South Atlantic League crown with Savannah in 1996. Hector Berrios will return for a fourth season in the organization, as he was named the Arizona League Dodgers’ pitching coach after spending last season as the pitching coach for Double-A Chattanooga. Henry Cruz will take over as hitting coach, which will be his third season as a hitting coach in the organization (Ogden in 2007 and Inland Empire in 2008). Cruz was the Coordinator of Campo Las Palmas in the Dominican Republic the last five seasons.
