Michael Young Strongly Considering Retirement, The Interwebs Rejoice

If you don’t like Michael Young than you can party down after hearing this news. According to Ken Rosenthal, the veteran infielder is “strongly considering” retirement. Strongly considering are the words that were used. Apparently Young wants to spend more time with his family, despite receiving several decent offers from several different clubs.

If Young does retire than that makes the look of the 2014 Dodger bench even more of a mystery. Any idea of who the Dodgers will build their bench with is anyone’s guess at this point. Young who turned 37 last year and was acquired by the Dodgers from the Phillies in exchange for minor league pitcher Rob Rasmussen and some cash back on August 31st of last season.

Young played in 21 games for the Dodgers, and batted .314 (16 for 51) with no home runs in 53 plate appearances. Overall in 565 plate appearances  split between the Phillies and the Dodgers, Young posted a triple slash line of .279/.335/.395 with a .730 OPS, eight home runs, and 46 runs driven in. Young split time between first base and third base with the Phillies and Dodgers, but played a few games at second and short at the end of the season for the Dodgers.

Young a 14 year major league veteran has played for just three teams during his career. Young played 13 years with Texas before splitting the 2013 season with the Phillies and the Dodgers. Young has a career .300 mark with a .787 OPS, and 185 major league home runs. Young is also a seven time all-star, and has 2,375 hits including six 200+ hit seasons.

According to reports, the Brewers, Rockies, Nationals and Yankees had all shown interest in Young, and had severe desperation at the corner infield spots. The Dodgers had scared everyone with rumors they would resign Young to play third base. Thankfully those rumors were put to rest once the club resigned Juan Uribe. It goes without saying that Young is as old and declined as they come. Which explains why so many people do not want to see Young anywhere near a Dodger uniform in 2014. It looks like the internet may not have Michael Young to kick around anymore. Young has a wife and three sons, and is a Covina, CA native.
