Dodgers DFA Sellers To Clear Room For Arruebarrenna

So we have our first DFA victim of the spring, and his name is Justin Sellers. The Dodgers announced this morning they have finalized the five year contract for Cuban infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena, and in a corresponding roster move to clear room, have designated infielder Justin Sellers for assignment.

This should everyone how low the Dodgers really are on Sellers. It’s a shame because I liked the guy, but unfortunately, he just couldn’t hit enough to save his job. Arruebarrena is considered as a glove first type of infielder, and a very slick fielder. The Dodgers like his glove, and seem to be pretty high on him.

As for Sellers, the 28-year old Bellflower native has played in parts of three seasons for the Dodgers since 2011. Sellers goes into DFA-land with an MLB career triple slash line of .199/.278/.301 with three home runs in 266 plate appearances.

Last season Sellers batted .188 with one home run in 77 plate appearances, and 27 games played. In his career, Sellers has split time between shortstop, second base, and third. But the majority of Seller’s playing time has been at shortstop, where he’s seen 50 MLB games of action. Sellers has a career +3 defensive runs saved at shortstop, and +3 at second base. Sellers also known as Sellblock, was considered a candidate for a bench spot this spring.

Fear not though, Sellers fans, we may not have seen the last of him. The Dodgers have ten days to figure out what they want to do with him. Sellers could accept an assignment back to the minors, or if he clears waivers he could end up back in Albuquerque.
