Dodgers Announce Second Round of Spring Training Cuts

The Dodgers cut five players following the game on Monday afternoon, sending the players to the minor league side of camp. Right-hander Matt Magill was optioned and non-roster invitees Carlos Frias, J.C. Boscan, Clint Robinson, and Brendan Harris were reassigned.

speedy second baseman the starting job, for now. Harris only hit .158 this Spring with 3 hits over 19 at-bats. He played in 14 games. Harris has 201 Major League games under his belt, but the Dodgers didn’t feel too impressed with the right-hand hitting infielder.

Clint Robinson, the big left-hand hitting first baseman, was reassigned after hitting very well this Spring. He collected 8 hits including a homerun over 14 games good for a .364 batting average. The 29-year old flashed his power potential, but he will be most likely playing in Albuquerque this season…again. With Scott Van Slyke assured a bench spot, Robinson didn’t really have a chance to make the team this Spring.

J.C. Boscan, the 34-year old catcher, is behind Drew Butera and Miguel Olivo in the catching depth charts, and he was reassigned after 5 games this Spring. In 4 at-bats, Boscan had one hit, a run, and two walks. Butera and Olivo are duking it out for that back-up third catcher spot on the plane to Australia. Olivo certainly made a impression during Monday’s game after hitting a bases clearing double and then stealing third base against the A’s.

runs on 8 hits with 2 strikeouts and a walk.

with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks over 5 2/3 innings. The 24-year old Simi Valley native, debuted with the Dodgers on April 27th last year. He started 6 games for the Dodgers in 2013, and he had a 0-2 record with a 6.51 ERA in 27 2/3 innings pitched in the Majors. He struck out 26 batters, but he also walked 28 batters while wearing Blue last year. He started 16 games for the AAA-Isotopes last season and went 6-2 with a 3.47 ERA. Magill will anchor the Isotopes’ rotation in 2014, but I won’t be surprised to see Magill vying for his first Major League win at some point this season. Eight non-roster players remain in camp with 43 players remaining overall. Cuts may come more swiftly this week since the final Spring game at Camelback Ranch will be on Sunday, March 16th.
