Combining two of my passions, baseball and the movies, the Dodgers bring back the Dodger Stadium Movie Series for 2014. The Dodgers will screen three of the all-time best baseball films following three Dodger home games this season.
Saturday, April 26 6:10 p.m. vs. Colorado Field of Dreams
Saturday, May 31 4:15 p.m. vs. Pittsburgh A League of Their Own
Saturday, August 16 6:10 p.m. vs. Milwaukee The Natural
The movie screenings are free with ticket purchase.
"“We’re excited to provide fans with family-friendly entertainment on the field and on the big screen with the Dodger Stadium Movie Series,” said Dodger Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Lon Rosen. “Last season’s screenings were so popular, we are delighted to once again offer Dodger fans the opportunity to watch their favorite baseball films here at Dodger Stadium. There is nothing quite like the atmosphere of an iconic baseball stadium as a venue to watch some of the greatest sports films.”"
Last season, the Dodgers screened 42 The Jackie Robinson Story and The Sandlot. Perhaps next season they can show Major League, one of my favorites and a great movie to share with other baseball fans at a filled Dodger Stadium.
The Dodgers will show three classic baseball films following three home games this season.
The movie going experience is much like going out to the ballgame. As an audience member, or fan, you are sharing the experience at the same time. While ball games don’t require dimmed lights or quieted voices, going to the movies or a Dodger game can help one escape everyday life for a frame or an inning. Baseball lends itself to the medium of baseball so well. The on field drama within the game can be more entertaining than any scripted scene. Yet there is something magical about watching The Natural on the big screen and immersing yourself within the baseball fantasy for a bit. I hope the Dodgers continue to blend the two entertainment sectors (professional sports and the movies) and provide an all encompassing baseball experience for Dodger fans.
●Two years ago I outlined my Top 10 Baseball Films, and The Natural got the top spot while Field of Dreams came in a close second. A League of Their Own was my fifth best baseball movies with Major League coming in fourth and Bull Durham third best.
