Report: Dodgers Interested in Jon Lester

On a day where the San Francisco Giants acquired Boston’s Jake Peavy, the Dodgers are apparently interested in one of their pitchers, too.

According to ESPNBoston’s Gordon Edes, the Dodgers have had discussions with the Red Sox about acquiring their ace, Jon Lester. With the Rays likely holding on to David Price because of their sudden reemergence in the AL East race, there aren’t many premier pitchers left on the trade market. With Boston almost certain to sell, Lester becomes an intriguing piece for contenders to consider trading for. His asking price will be extremely high; Boston was able to acquire San Francisco’s #2 and #7 rated prospects in exchange for Peavy, even though he’s in the midst of one of his worst seasons ever.

The Dodgers’ interest in Lester should come as no surprise, as they’re eagerly trying to bolster their rotation for the stretch. However, their talks with Boston about Lester “have not progressed very far to date”, and it’s far from a sure thing of happening.

Even if the Dodgers fail to acquire Lester, you can guarantee they’ll still make a move for a starting pitcher. Dan Haren’s next start has already been skipped, and Josh Beckett is still battling an injured hip.

Will they make a splash? We’ll just have to wait and see.
