Stults Versus Hernandez in Game Two, On Greinke Bobblehead Night

It’s fitting how we’re waiting on word about Zack Greinke’s health and tonight is his bobblehead night. Oh the irony. We might not know anything until tomorrow about whether or not he can make his scheduled start Thursday night versus San Diego in the series finale.

In the meantime, the Dodgers will go for a series win in game two tonight. The Dodgers were able to hang on Tuesday night for an 8-6 win. It was an exciting game with a lot of offense. The game ended on a tag out at third on Abraham Almonte after a single to center from Jedd Gyorko. The play was reviewed and the call on the field upheld.

Eric Stults-5-13 vs. Roberto Hernandez-7-8

Tonight’s pitching match-up will feature former Dodger Eric Stults going up against newest Dodger Roberto Hernandez.

Stults is a big left handed starter who used to pitch for the Dodgers from 2006-2009. He is most known for throwing the only complete game shutout for the Dodgers in 2009. Stults had a cup of coffee with Colorado, and the White Sox before joining the Padres.

Stults has faced the Dodgers once this year. He lost to the Boys in Blue back on June 22. In that game he limited the Dodgers to two earned runs on six hits over seven frames, but lost 2-1. The Dodgers have seen him many times over the last few years.  The big left hander is 1-4 with a 3.96 ERA in six starts. At Dodger Stadium he is 6-7 with a 3.99 ERA in 19 games. He’s shutout the Dodgers twice in his career.

Overall Stults is 5-13 with a 4.64 ERA in 24 starts. He’s struck out 81 and walked 33 to give him a 2-1 strikeout to walk ratio. The Dodgers are hitting .355 (38 for 107) with seven home runs and 18 runs driven in. Darwin Barney is 6 for 14 against Stults, with a home run. Adrian Gonzalez has hit two home runs. Andre Ethier, A.J. Ellis, Carl Crawford, and Scott Van Slyke have all hit home runs against him.

Roberto Hernandez will make his Dodger Stadium debut and third start for the Dodgers. The Dodgers acquired him from the Phillies on August 7 for minor leaguer Jesmuel Valentin, and some cash. In his last start he pitched well against Atlanta, and got the win. He has not faced San Diego this season. Hernandez has faced the Padres just once. In that game he won, throwing six frames, and allowing two earned runs on five hits with four whiffs.
