Hyun-jin Ryu struggled in his first game back with the big league club and the Dodgers offense could not make contact as they fell to the Padres.

Hyun-jin Ryu made his first start since the 2014 postseason for the Dodgers this evening. He went 4.2 innings, allowed six runs, walked two and struck out four batters. You had to figure that he was not going to come out looking like Clayton Kershaw right off the bat. Ryu has been on the bench for awhile and struggled with multiple injuries that just created setback and setback for his career.

Ryu gave up a home run and the first run of the game to the first batter he faced. Melvin Upton Jr. sent a ball yard which gave the Padres a 1-0 lead. After facing Upton, Ryu got three quick outs and the inning was over. The Padres would score another in the second inning. Derek Norris led off with a walk and then Alexei Ramirez singled to center. Pitcher Drew Pomeranz joined in on the rally when he singled in a run. Ryu finally had a 1-2-3 inning in the third and held the Padres scoreless for the first time tonight.

The Padres would score their third run in the fourth inning. Norris led off with a single, but reached second due to a throwing error from Corey Seager. Ramirez followed him up with a double and the score was now 3-0. Three more runs would be scored by the Padres and charged to Ryu in the fifth inning. Back to back doubles would score one run from Matt Kemp and Yangervis Solarte. Norris was then intentionally walked and Alex Dickerson tripled. Dickerson’s triple was basically a gift to the Padres. Yasiel Puig completely misplayed the ball. Even Vin Scully had some choice words to say about Puig playing the ball. Had Puig played the ball well, he would have caught it for the third out and saved two more runs.

The Dodgers got their first hit of the night in the bottom of the third when Howie Kendrick led off the inning and reached on an infield single to second. They would not get another hit until the bottom of the fourth when Trayce Thompson doubled. Thompson also made a great catch at the center field wall tonight. The Dodgers would end the game with just two hits all night. Corey Seager also went 0-4 at the plate this evening so his 19 game hitting streak has come to an end. The Dodgers offense as a whole was clearly shut down as the Padres pitching dominated them all night.

Good news of the night is that Ryu is still in one piece after pitching for the first time since the end of 2014. He did look a little gassed in his last inning, so the true test will be to see if he is ready for his next start and how he feels tomorrow. Carlos Frias was called up to help patch a tired bullpen. Frias pitched tonight in his first major league game this season. Only Casey Fien and Frias were used tonight, so at least the bullpen got the night off. The Dodgers desperately need to figure out their offensive struggles.

Game two of the series will be tomorrow and first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM. The Giants had the day off so with tonight’s loss, the Dodgers now sit 6.5 back in the NL West division.
