Dodgers rookie phenom Cody Bellinger wins his first ever Player of the Week honor just two weeks into his professional career.

In only his second week in the majors, Bellinger has already begun to make an impact in the MLB. After making his big leagues debut on April 25th, Bellinger has really taken the league by storm and continued to do so in his second week in the MLB.

Last week, Bellinger hit .429 (9-21) with 3 home runs and 9 RBI over the span of five games. In those five games, Bellinger had four multi-hit games and saw his batting average rise to .357 on the season. That was good enough to earn his first player of the week honor.

Bellinger also had a multi-home run game on Friday night against the San Diego Padres, before hitting his first ever grand slam on Saturday evening. Cody now has two multi-home run games in his career in that many weeks.

Bellinger has looked very comfortable at the plate in his first two weeks in the big leagues, and the Dodgers hope this production can continue all season long. Bellinger is already tied for the team lead with 5 home runs on the season and is 4th on the team with 14 RBI.

At this point, the kid looks like the real deal. It’s exciting to have a young polarizing player to watch on the field every day, and Bellinger’s baseball IQ seems to be up there with the best of them. The kid is having productive, quality at-bats and has only struck out eight times in 48 at-bats (16%), which is impressive for a 20-year-old.

There’s no doubt Bellinger is the flavor of the shiny new toy for Dodger fans, and his production has given Dodger fans a lot to be excited about for the upcoming years.

More from Dodgers Way

Kudos to the front office for never parting ways with the Dodgers young prospects when they were making their championship run the last four seasons. With a young core of Seager, Pederson, Urias, and now Bellinger, the team is going to continue to be competitive for many years to come.

Bellinger becomes the first Dodger to win player of the week since 2015 when Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke took home the honors. The Dodgers released an article early this morning comparing Bellinger’s hot start to Dodger great Eric Karros in 1992.

There’s no doubt Cody is white hot to start his career. But if I know anything about the game of baseball, is that the game could be very humbling. We see hot starts to careers all the time, but it’s when pitchers begin to make adjustments is when careers are shaped into Hall of Fame profiles.

I love watching Bellinger’s style of play. He’s electrifying the team and is helping keep the team above .500. Adrian Gonzalez being placed on the DL gives Cody some more time in the big leagues. I can’t imagine Roberts sending Bellinger back down once Gonzalez returns, but who knows how the front office wants to manage Bellinger’s exposure.

Next: Why the Dodgers Should NOT Trade for Braun

One thing is certain, however. Bellinger can play in the majors. As Dodger fans, let’s stop and enjoy what we’re watching as it happens. We may be coming up in an era where we relive the Dodgers rostering five consecutive Rookie of the Year award winners like they did from 1992 through 1996. Congrats, Cody! Let’s keep the honors coming!
