Yasmani Grandal, Catcher

Again, this might be a result of the dip in power numbers, but Grandal has been one of the best catchers in the NL through the first two months of the season. The current leader for the NL catcher spot is (by no surprise) Buster Posey, but that shouldn’t make Grandal go overlooked.

If we look at Grandal’s last thirty games, Grandal is at the top of the list for the most productive catchers in the NL. During that span, Grandal is hitting .341/.379/.537 with a pair of home runs and 16 RBI. Of all the catchers in the NL that is second best to none other than Buster Posey.

I’m not arguing that Posey shouldn’t be the NL starting catcher. Instead, I’m arguing that Grandal shouldn’t be that low on the voting list (currently ranked 5th). Yaz only has 128,000 votes during the first update and trails Wilson Contreras, Yadier Molina, and Matt Wieters.

If we’re comparing numbers, Grandal has greater value than each of those three catchers ranked ahead of him. See for yourself.

W. Contreras – .243, 5 HR, 24 RBI

Y. Molina – .263, 5 HR, 22 RBI

M. Wieters – .274, 4 HR, 17 RBI

Y. Grandal – .288, 5 HR, 23 RBI

All in all, Posey is and should be the clear front-runner for the position. But that’s not to say, us Dodger fans, should stop voting for our players like Grandal who are deserving of a spot, or at least more votes to help show the manager that he belongs as a reserve at the very least.
