The Dodgers made additional roster moves today, adding two struggling outfielders back to the LA roster.

The Dodgers have recalled struggling players, Joc Pederson and Trayce Thompson from Triple-A Oklahoma City. Los Angeles has the luxury to have these two struggling players with them on the team because of the expanded rosters and comfortable division lead. They’ll allow the team to give rest to players such as Chris Taylor, Cody Bellinger and Yasiel Puig, in an effort to keep that trio fresh for the playoffs. But they won’t be getting much from the duo except for healthy bodies.

Joc Pederson has been absolutely brutal this season. After hitting .215 with a .747 OPS and 11 home runs in 87 games for Los Angeles this season, he was demoted to Triple-A. He then proceeded to hit .167 (12 for 72) with a .522 OPS and three home runs in 20 games. Ouch.

Thompson has been struggling dearly as well in 2017. He’s had multiple stints in Los Angeles this year but has spent most of this time in the minors because of the team’s depth and his lack of production (to put it nicely).

In the show, he had 43 at-bats but had just five hits (.116 average) and an ugly 19 strikeouts. He has not fared much better in the minors though, totaling a .212/.269/.363 slash line and nine home runs across 339 at-bats.

Both have had flashes in the past, but it’s not a promising sign when you struggle even more against Triple-A pitching after being terrible against Major League pitching.

Both are playing for their future in Los Angeles, as the franchise has a large glut of outfielders. The duo’s struggles could make them easily expendable and nonessential to the franchise’s future.

Joc’s demotion was supposed to be a reset button, a fresh start. A chance for him to straighten out and settle on one set of mechanics. But nope, he was terrible when facing lesser competition, making his future in Los Angeles even bleaker with each appearance. Trayce Thompson’s may not have a future in Los Angeles either.

September will be crucial for them, and possibly their last month in blue. For their sakes, hopefully, they can rediscover their past form, and for the Dodgers’ sake, hopefully, the duo can rebuild any trade value they have lost or somehow help the team win games.
