PITTSBURGH, PA – AUGUST 24: Yasmani Grandal /

Yasmani Grandal

. Catcher. Dodgers. YASMANI GRANDAL. C+

Grandal had a rather pedestrian August. In 20 games and 82 plate appearances, Grandal had a slash line of .216/.293/.432 with 8 RBI and 9 runs scored. The batting average and on-base percentage are not ideal out of your everyday catcher, but Grandal isn’t asked to contribute much to the team’s batting average numbers.

Instead, what sticks out is the .432 slugging percentage, which was good enough for 5th on the club during August. Out of Grandal’s 16 hits during August, 8 of them went for extra bases including 4 long balls to bring his season total 19.

Those positive power numbers were a result of Grandal squaring up the baseball very well. In those at bats, Grandal had a 22% line drive percentage and averaged a hard hit rate just under 40% (39.2%), which also included a 19 % home run to fly ball percentage. Grandal had a relatively low BABIP (.255), which could be the main reason why he was hitting in the low .200’s as his BAIBP on the year currently sits at .309.

As normal, Grandal was also effective defensively behind the plate. Grandal ended the month of August with a  2.5 WAR defensively. Grandal has always been considered one of the game’s elite defensive catchers and the month of August was no different.

Grandal had a Grandal-Esq month. Showing a decent amount of power, while not hitting for very much average. He’s quietly having a solid season and this month was no different earning him a C+.
