The Dodgers made an addition to their major league bullpen on Friday by claiming right-handed reliever Erik Goeddel off waivers from the Seattle Mariners.

The Dodgers claimed Goeddel off of waivers, and since he is out of options, he is joining the Dodgers in Washington, and a roster move will need to be made for him to be added to the roster.  Goeddel is twenty-nine years old, and the Dodgers claimed his younger brother Tyler earlier this week.

Erik Goeddel was a 24th round pick in 2010 by the New York Mets.  He made his big league debut in 2014 and spent the last few seasons on the Mets roster at times.  This year he posted a 1.23 ERA for the Seattle Mariners and held batters to a .167 average in 7 1/3 innings.  At Triple-A Tacoma this season he threw nine innings allowing no earned runs and did not allow a single inherited runner to score.

According to his scouting report, Goeddel throws in the low 90’s and is a three-pitch pitcher with a curveball and splitter as his offspeed pitches.  Goeddel likes to use his fastball to get ahead in the count and relies on his offspeed pitches when he is ahead in the count.  Despite only throwing in the low 90’s, Goeddel has averaged 9.4 strikeouts per nine innings in his major league career.  It’s clear the club sees something in him that made them claim him and add him to the big league roster.

It’s unclear what the corresponding move is that the Dodgers are making.  The club did designate Henry Owens for assignment to make room on the forty man roster but to add him to the active roster another move will need to be made.  While everyone is likely hoping Pedro Baez is optioned, a more likely move would be Hudson being released, or someone with options being demoted like Adam Liberatore.  I would guess that Daniel Hudson is cut since he has now done well despite possessing above-average stuff.

The Dodgers are hoping Goeddel turns into the latest waiver wire find as they already found a decent reliever in JT Chargois who was placed on waivers by the Twins earlier this year.  The Dodgers are still searching to find the right late-inning combo to get the game to Kenley Jansen.  Goeddel will likely get a look until Tom Koehler is ready to be activated from the disabled list.
