The Dodgers have recalled Julio Urias, and he is rejoining the club in Cincinnati.  Urias pitched yesterday as the OKC Dodgers season came to an end.

The Dodgers have recalled Julio Urias from Triple-A, and he will rejoin the Dodgers in Cincinnati.  This concludes the rehabilitation process for the still very young left-hander as he went down last June with an Anterior shoulder capsule injury.

The estimated rehab time for Urias was 12-14 months, so Urias returned right on schedule.  The question remains how the Dodgers plan to use Julio.  In the minor leagues during his rehab, Urias was not pitching on back to back days.  He did start pitching with only two days in between appearances recently, so he is trending in the right direction.

During his rehab process, Julio Urias made rehab appearances with the AZL Dodgers, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, Tulsa Drillers, and the OKC Dodgers.  Counting the regular season only, Urias made eight appearances and allowed a .233 opponent’s batting average.  Urias’s ERA was not as kind as he posted a 5.40 ERA.

It will be interesting to see what kind of stuff Urias has this season in the minors he was routinely throwing around 93-94 miles per hour which is only a few ticks slower than his velocity before his surgery.  The Dodgers will also monitor Urias’s velocity when he pitches more frequently to see if there is any dip in his fastball speed.

There are still three weeks left in the season so if Julio Urias can show he’s healthy, effective, and able to take the ball on back to back days then he still can be a part of the Dodgers’ postseason roster if they make it there.

With Tony Cingrani’s season appearing to be over the Dodgers could use another bonafide lefty in the pen to go with Scott Alexander.  Adam Liberatore was recently designated for assignment which ruled him out as an option. Since the Dodgers now have the benefit of a forty man roster, they can bring Urias along slowly if they wish without running down the other arms in the bullpen.

The Dodgers also have Scott Alexander who suffered the same injury Julio did so if Urias is looking for questions or advice, he can look to one of his teammates in the bullpen for advice.  Scott Alexander can throw as hard as he did before his injury so there is hope that Julio Urias can still be an elite starting pitcher as early as next season.
