The Dodgers seemed to have given up the notion that Julio Urias can make an impact this season.  With their Triple-A season ending, the next step for Julio remains unclear.

The Oklahoma City Dodgers season came to an abrupt end on Sunday as the Dodgers lost to the Memphis Redbirds in ten innings.  With their Triple-A team now done for the season, the Dodgers now have to figure out what the next step is for Julio Urias.

Julio actually pitched yesterday and allowed one hit in a scoreless sixth inning.  It continued his up and down comeback attempt as three days prior, Urias allowed two runs in only two-thirds of an inning before he was pulled.  It seems as if Urias has a good outing and then follows it up every time with a string of bad outings.

As the Triple-A season concludes, there are only two places the Dodgers could send Julio Urias with the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and Tulsa Drillers still participating in the playoffs.  The Drillers have games tomorrow and Wednesday while the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes do not start up again until Friday.

At this point, we are now almost at the middle of September and the Dodgers must decide if it’s even worth it for Urias to continue his rehab this season.  Even if Urias is able to pitch to his full ability, the Dodgers’ minor league teams only have a handful of games remaining.

Urias has not yet shown the ability to pitch in back to back games.  For Julio to make it back to the majors to prove he belongs again, and show the ability to pitch on back to back days, the clock may have struck zero already.  That is asking a lot for Urias and it’s not worth rushing him which is something the Dodgers have mentioned repeatedly.

The Dodgers will most likely provide an update on Julio Urias in the next few days but in all likelihood, they will shut him down for the rest of the 2018 season.  The Dodgers have made additions to their bullpen and the bullpen is starting to round into form.

It appears Urias missed the train and he will have to have a strong showing in spring training next year to have a role with the 2019 Dodgers.  The big question remains whether the Dodgers will work him back as a starting pitcher next year or a reliever.

The Dodgers promising young prospect has a lot of questions to answer before next season begins, but with his work ethic and talent, he should be able to impact the 2019 LA Dodgers one way or another.
