High-A is often where stars are born. It’s hard to recognize a player’s true talent in Low-A let alone rookie ball just because the level of competition is nothing inspiring.

In High-A, players start to get a taste of some high-level competition and teams like the Dodgers will even send major leaguers there for rehab work. It’s the lowest high of the minors.

Through a week of play, the Quakes have had some solid performances and a 5-2 record to show for it. To get them there, players like Edwin Uceta, Sven Schueller and Jeter Downs have had nice starts to the year but the award for top performance goes to Donovan Casey after week one.

In just 18 at-bats, the sixth most on the team, Casey leads the team in hits (6) and ranks second in RBIs (5).

The hot and fast start to the season for the Dodger prospect is a welcomed opening to the year after the 23-year-old 20th round pick was sent to High-A for the second consecutive season.

Casey was drafted in 2017 out of Boston College as an outfielder. He is known for a solid contact-oriented bat with small flashes of power in his swing. In three years at BC, Casey hit a total of four home runs, a number he eclipsed entirely last year alone with six home runs as a Quake.

For Casey, this may be a bit of a prove it season. At 23-years-old, the outfield prospect will need to try and break out of High-A to show he still has a shot at system advancement.
