The Dodgers’ second-best trade piece at this year’s trade deadline is starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin.  While Gonsolin is currently on the minor league IL, he can still be traded and is one of the more expendable prospects for the Dodgers at the moment.  Tony is the Dodgers’ number five prospect according to MLB prospect pipeline.

While Gonsolin has passed prospects like Dennis Santana, he is not on Dustin May’s level and will soon be passed up by Josiah Gray and possibly Edwin Uceta. Tony Gonsolin has more trade value than Dennis Santana given his surge in the last year.  He was LA’s pitching prospect of the year last season and has more value now than he ever will.

If the Dodgers want to swing a deal for a big-time reliever, including Gonsolin is much more doable than Dustin May.  Much like the Dodgers’ catching depth, their starting pitching depth is superb so dealing away a valuable prospect like Tony Gonsolin would not hurt the farm system too much.  Gonsolin has a ceiling of a number three starter, but in LA he may never get a chance to stick around.
