One of the Dodgers’ biggest weeks is here, the week of the MLB trade deadline.  We have the latest rumors from the past week and some more Dodgers’ news.

The Dodgers are reportedly going to call Tony Gonsolin up to make a start for the injured Ross Stripling.  Stripling strained his neck in his last start and according to Dave Roberts, he will miss a start or two.  The timing of Gonsolin’s start is interesting given that he will start the day before the trade deadline and Gonsolin is one of the few top prospects the Dodgers can afford to part with.

Gonsolin has spent time on the minor league IL and last started on Thursday lasting just two-plus innings while allowing two runs for the AAA Oklahoma City Dodgers.  Gonsolin currently ranks as the Dodgers’ number six prospect so it wouldn’t be surprising if scouts watch him pitch on Tuesday.

This season, Tony Gonsolin made one start for the Dodgers in Arizona and lasted four innings while allowing four runs.  The runs were not entirely all his fault as he had some shaky defense behind him.  With his first two big-league starts coming in Arizona and at Coors Field,  Gonsolin has sure been thrown into the fire to begin his big league career.

The Dodgers have had the luxury of having two super-utility players over the past few seasons in Kiké Hernandez and Chris Taylor.  Now they are going to see how big of a luxury they were as Taylor is already on the IL and Hernandez should join him on the IL as soon as today.

Dave Roberts said the club could go outside the organization and that is exactly what they did as they acquired infielder Kristopher Negrón from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for shortstop Daniel Castro.  Negrón had just 23 at-bats with the Mariners this season and hit .217.  He has bounced around the majors since 2012 and played every position except catcher (and pitcher).

While Negrón is unlikely to stick with the team long, the 33-year-old will provide depth and gives the Dodgers a true backup shortstop as nobody on the active roster can play short once Hernandez gets placed on the IL.  While Kristopher Negrón may not be the next Chris Taylor, he gives LA the infield depth they need right now.

The trade deadline buzzer will sound on Wednesday as the Dodgers are in the middle of a game with the Colorado Rockies.  There have been a few notable trades made but the expected flurry of moves have not started.  Jake Diekman a reliever the Dodgers had interest in, was dealt to the Oakland A’s.

Marcus Stroman, a pitcher the Dodgers were considering pursuing, was also dealt yesterday to the New York Mets.  According to Ken Rosenthal, the Dodgers are considering starting pitchers given the lack of elite bullpen arms available and Stroman was one starting pitcher they were looking into.

Starting pitching-wise, the Dodgers have also shown interest in Noah Syndergaard.  The Padres have been the team linked to “Thor” the most but Andrew Friedman is known to come out of nowhere as the Dodgers keep things very close to vest in the front office.  If the Dodgers want a starter with the potential to dominate a postseason game, Syndergaard has the kind of stuff to do it.

On the reliever side of the trade market, the rumors have been much quieter.  The Dodgers continue to have scouts watch Tigers’ closer Shane Greene but he has not pitched since July 23rd.  Outside of Greene, Edwin Diaz has garnered interest from the Dodgers despite his down season.  Diaz has struggled but still is under control for three more seasons.

The Dodgers and the rest of the league continue to wait and see if the Giants will sell.  The Giants have Will Smith who would be one of the most coveted relievers on the trade market if they do sell.  Thus far the Giants and Pirates have refused to put Felipe Vazquez and Will Smith on the trade block.
