One of the newest Dodgers, Jedd Gyorko, is currently on a rehab assignment. Through two games he has shown his versatility and power.

When the Dodgers acquired Jedd Gyorko at the trade deadline, the immediate reaction among Dodger fans was huh?  After all, the Dodgers have plenty of versatile players including the recently acquired Tyler White.  That didn’t stop Andrew Friedman from adding more depth as the Dodgers have learned over the past few seasons that you can never have too much depth.

Jedd Gyorko started his rehab assignment with the double-A Tulsa Drillers on Saturday.  In that game, he started at third base and played five innings on the field.  He went 1-2 and added a single to begin his rehab assignment with the Dodgers.  He started again last night, this time at first base.

Monday night he went 2-3 with a walk, a single, and a two-run home run.  It’s safe to say that Gyorko’s rehab assignment has gotten off to a good start. He has always flashed power, hitting as many as 30 home runs in 2016.  He followed that season up with a twenty homer season in 2017.

His 2018 season was a downer as Jedd hit just eleven home runs last year.  Then there is this season which has been an injury-plagued season for Gyorko.  Now he is fighting his way back and looking to find his way onto the Dodgers’ postseason roster.  If everyone is healthy he may be a long shot, but he definitely has a shot.

With Chris Taylor and Enrique Hernandez both likely to begin rehab assignments soon, there is a big roster crunch coming for the Dodgers.  It won’t be Hernandez or Taylor that are left off the roster, so that means a decision is coming for another player or two on the active roster.

Jedd Gyorko will likely take Tyler White’s spot on the active roster.  White was signed as insurance for David Freese who is on the IL and will most likely return in early September.  Gyorko is a more versatile version of Tyler White as he can play every infield position aside from the catcher and pitcher positions.

Nobody knows what Andrew Friedman had in mind when he acquired Jedd Gyorko.  The Dodgers got international cap space in the trade so perhaps this was just removing Gyorko from the Cardinals’ hands in exchange for more international spending power.  Regardless, we should get the answer soon, when Gyorko’s rehab assignment is over.
