The Dodgers received surprising news on Saturday as it was announced Julio Urias will serve a 20 game suspension for an incident from earlier this year.
News came from out of left field on Saturday that Julio Urias has accepted a twenty game suspension for an incident that occurred earlier this season. While the suspension is twenty games, he will serve 15 games on the restricted list since he already served five games when he was on administrative leave.
Julio was placed on administrative leave back in early May after being arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence. While he was on the restricted list for seven days, five of those games he missed count towards his current suspension.

While the most important thing out of this is that Julio Urias learns from this incident, it’s worth noting that Urias is still eligible for the postseason. Unlike suspensions for performance-enhancing drugs, domestic violence policy suspensions do not always carry the same postseason penalty. Aroldis Chapman and Roberto Osuna both pitched in October the seasons they were suspended.
Odubel Herrera of the Phillies was suspended for a domestic violence incident earlier this season and his suspension included a postseason ban for 2019 so it appears that this is on a case by case basis. As far as a corresponding roster move, Casey Sadler was recalled with Urias moving to the restricted list.
Sadler’s stay could be brief as Tony Gonsolin was working out with the team in Atlanta today. Gonsolin is expected to be activated and start Sunday’s series finale against the Braves. In order to make room for Gonsolin another move will need to be made on Sunday. Josh Sborz is another pitcher who could be optioned to make room for Gonsolin.
With Urias inactive for the next 15 games, the Dodgers will be able to experiment with relievers like Dustin May at the end of games, as long as he stays in a relief role. Joe Kelly and Pedro Baez have become the late-inning bridge to Kenley Jansen but Urias has also closed the last few innings of games as he did on Friday night.
