Martin becomes a personal catcher?

This one comes on the heels of a slump busting start by Hyun-Jin Ryu and David Vassegh pointing out this point for the last few weeks.  Ryu had one of his best starts in a while with Russell Martin catching.  Will the Dodgers make Martin become Ryu’s personal catcher going forward?  It was just one outing but time will tell.

Entering Saturday night’s start, Ryu had made 18 starts with Russell Martin as his catcher and his ERA for those games was 1.70.  In five starts with Will Smith catching him, Ryu’s ERA was a much higher 5.81.  While catcher ERA isn’t always the best stat to gauge given that some outings a pitcher just doesn’t have it and the quality of opponent isn’t factored in, it is something to note.

It will be interesting to see if Russell Martin starts the next game that Hyun-Jin Ryu starts.
