Dodgers outfielder Andrew Toles was arrested in Florida.
By now you’ve probably heard that Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Andrew Toles was arrested this week when police officers found him sleeping behind Key West Airport in South Florida.
Let’s get you caught up on all of the latest information we know about the incident.
Why was Andrew Toles arrested?
According to the Miami Herald, Toles was sleeping behind the Federal Express Building located at the Key West Airport when police approached him and tried to get him to wake up and leave the area. After failing to move, possessing only a black bag, he was arrested on June 22 for a misdemeanor charge of trespassing.
He was kept at the Stock Island Detention Center, before posting $500 bond on Friday night, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. He is scheduled to be arraigned on July 2.
Why was Andrew Toles sleeping behind a FedEx building?
Sadly, it appears Toles has found himself in extremely difficult times. Upon being arrested, his address was listed as the “streets of Key West,” which makes it appear that he is homeless.
The former Dodger outfielder has a well-known history with depression and anxiety; this is an excellent article about his climb back to the majors in 2016. It is unclear what his current mental state is like.
Are the Dodgers doing anything to help Andrew Toles?
Former Dodger Jerry Hairston Jr. tweeted on Friday, “people that can help Tolesy have been made aware and will do their best to help.”
Several Dodger fans took to social media to make a plea for the Dodgers to provide support. There has been no public word from the team on the matter yet.
What has Andrew Toles been doing recently?
We don’t really know. Once Toles didn’t report to camp last year, he’s been on the restricted list and out of public view. While there has been plenty of speculation, nothing has been officially reported about what has kept him off the field for so long.
The 28-year-old burst onto the scene as a smooth-swinging rookie in 2016, but hasn’t played for the Dodgers in two years.
Toles’ path to Los Angeles is a story in itself. After struggling to keep himself on a college roster, he was eventually drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays. His baseball career appeared over when he was bagging groceries at a Kroger store in Georgia, but he was given another chance by Andrew Friedman with the Dodgers, and for a short while, he was one of the most popular players on the team.
