Los Angeles will still get an All-Star game.
With the coronavirus pandemic wrecking havoc on the scheduling of events in 2020, the Los Angeles Dodgers will be awarded the 2022 All-Star Game to make up for the lost event this season, per the Los Angeles Times.
The Dodgers were originally set to host the league’s best players this July at Dodger Stadium. While it took until today for the event to officially be canceled, it quickly became clear during the pause in baseball activities that it would be impractical to host it this year.
"“Once it became clear we were unable to hold this year’s All-Star festivities, we wanted to award the Dodgers with the next available All-Star Game, which is 2022,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said according to the LA Times."
The Los Angeles Dodgers will host the All-Star Game in 2022.
While the Dodgers are beginning to return to the field this week and are set to open their schedule at Dodger Stadium as early as July 23, Los Angeles County continues to see an uptick in coronavirus cases.
The All-Star Game has grown into a multi-day event to bring players, league officials, celebrities, and fans from all over the world together to celebrate the game in the middle of summer.
Without fans being able to attend, it didn’t make sense to try to reschedule the All-Star festivities this year. Since Atlanta has already been awarded the 2021 All-Star Game, the Dodgers get the next available opening in 2022.
Dodger fans are still awaiting guidance on tickets purchased to regular season games past the month of May. The team is issuing refunds or credits for tickets to games originally scheduled in the first three months of the season.
There is no word on what will happen for tickets purchased to the 2020 All-Star Game.
You can check the Dodger website for updates on ticket information. While the team is scheduled to begin play in late July, no fans will be in attendance, and based on the current health conditions around the country, it seems like it could be a while before fans are allowed to attend games.
