Following a historic scoreless streak in which the pen rattled off 38 consecutive innings pitched without allowing a run, the Los Angeles Dodgers’ bullpen has been up and down of late. LA's relief corps has shown to be human during the month of June.
It's safe to say that the Dodgers' bullpen has heard some of the complaints from the fanbase, but reliever Alex Vesia recently sent a direct message to those fans who hurled harsh critiques toward him and his teammates.
“We clicked off 40-something (scoreless innings) then we had a couple tough ones, and online everybody is supposed to get DFA'd,” Vesia said of internet haters.
“We believe in our guys in here. I certainly do," Vesia continued. "We’re going to have ups and downs but I think it helps us grow, so at the end of the day, that adversity right now will help us in the postseason.”
Despite their struggles, the Dodgers don't want fans to worry about their bullpen
Inconsistencies have marred Dodgers relievers this month. Nevertheless, there have been enough highs to supplement the lows. Vesia himself is sporting a sterling 2.34 ERA in 34 appearances this season. He has struck out 34 batters in 25⅓ innings, and has allowed opponents to hit just .125 against him. The left-hander also has three saves on the 2026 season.
Vesia has only sustained damage in three of his 34 outings, but it’s come in bunches. Teams have scored multiple runs in each of those appearances. The Dodgers lefty in the midst of one of his best seasons, and, along with Tanner Scott, has headlined a Dodgers bullpen that has seen a tremendous uptick in efficiency from last season to this one.
The Dodgers bullpen currently owns a 3.71 ERA — good enough for 10th in the league — after ranking 21st in that category last season (4.27). Moreover, the Dodgers 'pen could be primed to get better.
Edwin Díaz is projected to return at the end of July after he threw a 15-pitch bullpen sesssion on June 19. Right-hander Evan Phillips is also slated for a July return, with his rehab assignment scheduled to begin early next week.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers activated righty Brock Stewart from the IL Monday, who was dealing with a pair of ailments in his left foot. Stewart’s career began in L.A. in 2016 (2016-2019), and has made just two appearances this year, striking out three in scoreless showings.
A lot of times, players allow their work on the field to do the talking. In this instance, it appears that Vesia felt the need to speak up.
