Angels fans using new manager to dunk on Dodgers are hilariously missing a key detail

Gotta do your research.

On Tuesday, the Angels promoted former catcher Kurt Suzuki from special assistant to manager, three weeks after they booted Ron Washington from the role. The exact circumstances of Suzuki's elevation are already a little weird; he and GM Perry Minasian are both on one-year deals, so both men could very well be gone by this time next year.

Suzuki's hiring came on the heels of a breakdown in talks with longtime Angel Albert Pujols, but Arte Moreno was reportedly and unsurprisingly unwilling to pay Pujols what he wanted. As a result, Perry got his guy ... but didn't get his security.

The Angels are a weird, weird organization that's just been stumbling around in the dark since the late 2000s. They're the team that signed Anthony Rendon to a $245 million contract, heavily pursued Gerrit Cole, refused to re-sign Shohei Ohtani, and wasted Mike Trout's best years. Without a complete overhaul in personnel (and that includes the owner), it's hard to envision a world in which the Angels turn back into a serious franchise.

Angels fans are pretty weird too, and they'll hold onto anything that might make the future seem less bleak. Fan account Angels in the Diamond Club on Twitter found a new and hilarious way to grasp at straws while trying and failing to dunk on the Dodgers this week. They wrote of Suzuki's hiring, "What people aren't talking about is the massive advantage of having a Japanese American manager. The blue team's monopoly of Japanese players is over. What player coming from Japan isn't going to want to play for Suzuki?"

But Angels fans don't need to tell Dodgers fans about the advantages of having a Japanese manager. Dave Roberts is half-Japanese and was born in Japan.

There are a lot of layers that make this funny. First, there's forgetting that Roberts is Japanese, then there's the assumption that a manager on a one-year deal would be adequate incentive for a player to sign with the poorly-run Angels, and then there's the assumption that the Angels will be competitive in the free agent market at all.

This is the Angels we're talking about. Notably, their only Japanese player, Yusei Kikuchi, recently complained about a lack of air conditioning in the weight room, which Minasian directly addressed and denied, only for the team to silently post an open position for an AC/HVAC technician in the days following. You can't make this stuff up.

The Angels continue to be pitiful and laughable, and hiring a manager on a one-year deal, regardless of their ethnicity, isn't going to help anything.
