In the difficult moments following the Los Angeles Dodgers' elimination last week, Blake Snell didn't hesitate to share his thoughts on Tarik Skubal. Snell provided multiple quotes on Skubal, and each soundbite communicated his clear desire for the two-time Cy Young award-winner to stay in LA.
“I would love nothing more than for him to be back," Snell said. “The goal is to win a World Series, and we weren’t able to do that ... so now that it’s over, don’t leave," Snell added about Skubal.
But Snell didn't stop at locker room chatter. He's now taken to social media in his attempts to keep Skubal around.
Blake Snell keeps publicly expressing his desire to keep Tarik Skubal on the Dodgers
Snell's efforts are light-hearted, though earnest, but it'll take something far more serious (in the form of hundreds of millions of dollars) for the Dodgers to ensure that the No. 1 free agent on the market returns to Los Angeles in 2027.
There's no doubt that Skubal fit into LA's clubhouse seamlessly in 2026. It also makes a ton of sense that Skubal and Snell get along, seeing as they are both Cy Young award-winning lefties who share an agent in Scott Boras.
Surely, Skubal can see himself happily returning to the Dodgers next season and moving forward with the organization. Nonetheless, he knows it wouldn't be wise to share his personal thoughts on his free agency, which is exactly why he's been mostly mum on the topic since the season ended. The lefty didn't get into his future at all following LA's elimination, even when prompted on multiple occasions by reporters.
The Dodgers will face multiple challenges when it comes to signing Tarik Skubal to a new deal
Beyond the looming lockout possibility and the uncertainty about the next collective bargaining agreement, the Dodgers will face sturdy competition for Skubal's services, most likely in the form of New York Mets owner Steve Cohen's deep pockets.
How will Andrew Friedman and the rest of LA's front office approach the Skubal situation? Will having fallen short of a three-peat add extra motivation to Friedman's mindset about getting a deal done for Skubal, or might he go in a different direction? Given how Friedman's operated in recent years, one assumes he'll go all-in on Skubal and do what he can to out-joust Cohen.
It's hard to imagine the Dodgers not playing a crucial role in the upcoming Skubal sweepstakes. It's also scary from a baseball perspective to think about how much more effective Skubal might be on the Dodgers next season once he's more comfortable with his new organization.
Per usual, the National League is hoping that the Dodgers don't get their guy. That's all good and fair, but Friedman probably has other plans. In other words, Snell's wishes have a good chance of coming true this winter.
