For the first time in five or six years, the Boston Red Sox posted an offseason worth having. It still hasn't spared them from drama.
The Red Sox signed Alex Bregman to a three-year deal with opt-outs after the first two seasons to mitigate their right-handed offensive struggles. But they didn't tell Rafael Devers that he might be moved off third base until after they inked Bregman, despite only courting third basemen as their right-handed free agent or trade options.
Devers didn't take the news that he may be moved off third base well, but said he hasn't considered asking for a trade. That hasn't stopped baseball fans and writers from speculating about potential deals that could pull Devers out of Boston. Zachary D. Rymer of Bleacher Report proposed multiple trade packages that could pull Devers to teams across the league, and the one for the Los Angeles Dodgers is interesting, to say the least.
Rymer proposed that LA could ship Max Muncy, Chris Taylor, Bobby Miller and No. 4 Dodgers prospect Alex Freeland to Boston for Devers. The Dodgers would absolutely burn the Red Sox with this package, which is not something they're likely to let happen again after the Mookie Betts trade, which arguably began the superteam in Los Angeles.
Bleacher Report proposes insane trade that would bring seemingly disgruntled Rafael Devers from Red Sox to Dodgers
First and foremost, there's no way the Red Sox trade Devers. Boston's ownership has been on the outs among fans after multiple lame offseasons of low payroll, lackluster additions and one of the most controversial trades of all time after they beat the Dodgers in the 2018 World Series, and the front office can't risk another massive mistake. Signing Bregman was the team's first big-market move in years, and the Red Sox aren't — or shouldn't be — about to screw it up by trading the face of their franchise.
Second, Devers has nine years remaining on his 10-year extension, and this proposed package doesn't come close to meeting his long-term value. Muncy has been a reliable home run producer for the Dodgers over the years, but he's pushing 35 years old. Taylor's role with LA is uncertain in 2025, he's also pushing 35, and he batted just .202/.298/.300 over 87 games in 2024 while making $13 million. Miller has never posted more than 22 starts in the big leagues in a single season and clocked an 8.52 ERA last year. Lastly, Freeland is a shortstop prospect and Boston already has more middle infielders than it knows what to do with — the source of the Bregman/Devers drama in the first place. Its shortstop and second base prospects nearing MLB readiness are ranked much higher than Freeland, according to MLB Pipeline. Kristian Campbell comes in at No. 7 and Marcelo Mayer at No. 12, while Freeland clocks in at No. 72.
Most spring training position debates settle themselves before the start of the season. The odds that the Red Sox end up trading Devers are slim, so the Dodgers probably won't have the pleasure of fleecing Boston again any time soon. Even if the Red Sox do decide to trade Devers, it's hard to believe the package of Muncy, Taylor, Miller and Freeland would do the job.
