Dave Roberts clarifies comments on Dodgers' travel day that had Canada up in arms

Nothing like getting a little rise out of an entire country.

After knotting the World Series at a game apiece off the back of a second consecutive one-run complete game for Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Dodgers had Sunday off to travel back to LA for Games 3 through 5, to try to wrap this one up at home.

They ran into some trouble at Toronto Pearson Airport in the form of numerous delays and only made it back to LA right around their scheduled 5 p.m. workout.

Dave Roberts was asked about the holdups. He said, "I don't want to get too far into it. I just arrived about 30 minutes ago. So there was some delays. I don't know if there was intent or not. But, man, the international stuff was a bear. But we made it."

It was an admittedly pretty dim take from the skipper, and Blue Jays fans were quick to jump on it on social media, pointing out that any "international stuff" — customs, presumably — would've happened in the United States, not Canada. And, more importantly, the implication that the Canadian government purposely intervened to delay the Dodgers' flight sounds a lot like tinfoil hat kind of stuff.

Contrary to popular opinion, politics really can't be kept out of baseball, but in this case, there were no politics involved. Roberts himself admitted as much when he clarified his comments, saying, "I know the Prime Minister is not worried about calling airline security or the FAA to make sure that they delay us. I know that. Obviously. I think the Prime Minister has bigger fish to fry."

"Canada is not trying to sabotage the Dodgers," he continued. "I know that. It was just a long day."

The Dodgers may not have to worry themselves with a second trip out to Toronto at all, if they can take all three of their next games at home. The starters for Game 3 will be Max Scherzer and Tyler Glasnow, and the Dodgers are still waiting for something to really spark their lineup, though there were glimpses of it in Game 2, when Will Smith hit his first home run of the postseason and Max Muncy hit his second in the top of the seventh.

Long travel days are frustrating and exhausting, but maybe Roberts should just decline to comment next time the Dodgers have significant delays like this. The Blue Jays don't need more bulletin board material.
