The Los Angeles Dodgers' series finale against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday also happened to be Will Smith bobblehead night.
The giveaway marked the fourth in a series of bobbleheads the team is rolling out this season in celebration of last year's World Series victory over the New York Yankees. Earlier bobbleheads in the series featured Freddie Freeman’s walk-off grand slam, manager Dave Roberts’ celebration and Mookie Betts running to first base in the series-clinching Game 5 win.
There was just one problem with Smith's bobblehead night, though – Smith himself wasn't in the lineup for Wednesday's game. Instead, Roberts gave the nod to Dalton Rushing, who made his third start behind the dish since getting called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City.
Dave Roberts somehow botched Dodgers star Will Smith's bobblehead night at Dodger Stadium
When asked why Smith wasn't in the lineup on Wednesday, Roberts explained that it was an intentional effort to manage the workload of his catcher, who has at no point this season started four games in a row.
“It was more so that I just felt with (Yoshinobu) Yamamoto yesterday, I wanted to have Will catch him,” Roberts said (via Matthew Mareno of Dodger Blue). “We needed to find a win, and I just felt that the familiarity with those two was there, and Yamamoto is very nuanced with how he pitches, so he needed to catch that game, for me. And then I didn’t want Will to catch four games."
Roberts went on to admit that was aware of the poor timing of his decision, and he even caught some flak for it at home.
"My wife is upset that he’s not catching on his bobblehead night," Roberts said. "I just don’t keep track of bobblehead nights. But I didn’t want Will to catch four in a row, so that’s the genesis behind this. And so that’s kind of the thought.”
Hopefully, Roberts' strategy pays off, and Smith will be rested and healthy as the Dodgers look to defend their World Series title. In the meantime, however, most of the fans at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday were probably siding with Roberts' wife.
