Dodgers could be massive beneficiary of Red Sox's Adley Rutschman roster move

The Boston Red Sox just made a roster move that the Los Angeles Dodgers might benefit from. The Red Sox activated All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the IL on Tuesday and designated recently acquired backstop Jake Rogers for assignment.

Rogers was a member of the Red Sox for just eight days after Boston acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles as part of the trade deadline deal for Rutschman.

The 31-year-old went 3-for-6 with two doubles and two RBI during his brief time in a Red Sox uniform, but as soon as Boston had a healthy Rutschman and Connor Wong in the fold, Rogers became immediately expendable.

Rogers is now on waivers and awaiting what will be his fourth team in 2026. He's been tossed around a bit as an asset this year, but that doesn't change the fact that he provides value as an experienced backstop.

The Dodgers might want to consider acquiring Jake Rogers after Red Sox DFA

Los Angeles wouldn't be adding Rogers for his offense; he's a .199 career hitter. He can handle pitching staffs, and would be a low-cost, low-risk addition for a Dodgers team that's desperate for catching depth.

It's still unclear when Will Smith will return from a lingering neck issue, and while Dalton Rushing may have avoided surgery, he's most likely done catching in 2026.

The Dodgers reunited with Ben Rortvedt and Hunter Feduccia at the deadline, but neither player is quite as seasoned as Rogers. The veteran has also appeared in more regular season and playoff games than Rortvedt and Feduccia combined.

It's ironic that the Red Sox may have inadvertently given the Dodgers an opportunity to pick up Rogers. Some baseball fans see a Boston-Los Angeles matchup as a potential upcoming World Series showdown this October.

The whole Rogers storyline evaporates into thin air if the Dodgers don't seize the moment and bring in the mustachioed catcher. If LA is not interested, it means that Andrew Friedman and Co. are confident that Rortvedt and Feduccia are more than capable of holding down the fort until Smith returns to the roster.
