It's open season on the free agent market, but Dodgers fans seem a little more concerned about who the team will decide to re-sign rather than any new faces that could be added to the roster in 2025. Willy Adames, Garrett Crochet, Corbin Burnes, Max Fried — they would all be great and necessary additions, but fans' attentions are mostly turned toward the futures of this year's departing stars.
There have been calls for the Dodgers to re-sign Walker Buehler and Kiké Hernández, but those pale in comparison to the noise around Teoscar Hernández, who made himself a staple of LA's lineup this season and has made it very clear that he will come back if the Dodgers will have him.
Jeff Passan recently speculated that Hernández would be one of the first free agents to come off the board, and stated the obvious in reporting that the Dodgers were the favorites to sign him. (Breaking news: water is wet).
That doesn't mean that other teams can't or haven't been circling. Hernández has reportedly drawn interest from the Red Sox (again) and the Orioles, and he put a scare into Dodgers fans with his newest social media activity.
Hernández posted a 'thank you' note to fans on his Instagram this week and wiped his description and profile picture of most Dodgers signifiers.
Teoscar Hernández scares fans by wiping Instagram of Dodgers content
Hernández is still subtly repping the Dodgers in his profile picture, but he's wearing his National League All-Star uniform instead his usual Dodger blue. Maybe we're reading too much into this, but his 'thank you fans' post notably didn't include a 'goodbye,' which is slightly reassuring.
There's no reason to believe that Hernández suddenly doesn't want to re-sign with the Dodgers, but the longer they wait to re-sign him, the more fans will worry. Brandon Gomes has said that the front office is going to re-engage in negotiations with him and his agent, but it's also fair if Hernández wants to look like he's keeping all of his options open in public-facing forums.
If the Dodgers let him slip away, they might be treated to a small mob with torches and pitchforks outside of Dodger Stadium. He's clearly earned a place on the roster again, and hopefully for longer than just one more year, and he deserves to try to run back this year's successes in 2025. The front office doesn't really need more urging from fans to get him back, but we'll say it anyway: re-sign Hernández.
