Even if the three players the Dodgers sent to the Red Sox in exchange for Mookie Betts (and David Price) had at least kind of worked out, LA still easily would've gotten the last laugh in that trade. But, luckily for the Dodgers — and unluckily for the Red Sox, Yankees, and now Braves — none of them have.
Jeter Downs is out of professional baseball, Connor Wong has only had two above-replacement seasons and is batting .151 in 30 games this year, and Alex Verdugo was just DFA'ed by the Braves to make room on the roster for old Dodgers enemy Jurickson Profar, who is coming back from a PED suspension.
Verdugo was always the most promising of the three; he batted .294 with a .817 OPS in his last year in LA. He was never bad in his four years with the Red Sox but dropped off in New York, which left him lingering on the free agent market until a week before the season began.
Meanwhile, Betts will be a Dodger through the rest of his career and is a future Hall of Famer. That trade was the gift that keeps on giving.
The Braves have designated outfielder Alex Verdugo for assignment, sources tell @TheAthletic. Clearing a spot for the return of Jurickson Profar.

Braves DFA former top Dodgers prospect, Mookie Betts trade piece Alex Verdugo
Verdugo started his season in Triple-A because he missed spring training, while the floundering Braves put Bryan De La Cruz in left field after Profar's suspension. After De La Cruz disappointed in 16 games in Atlanta, they replaced him with Verdugo, who was only marginally better. He batted .239 with a .585 OPS in 56 games, which was enough to make even the stingy Braves eat what was left on the $1.5 million contract they gave him.
Betts has a 28.4 bWAR in the years since the trade; Verdugo and Wong combined are sitting at 12.3. Red Sox fans don't need even more reasons to resent the deal, but it's always nice to send a few reminders every now and then.
Betts is currently in a slump that Dodgers fans are overreacting to, but there's no question that he's one of the best players in baseball and a future Hall of Famer. Even the move to shortstop, which initially looked like a complete and total failure, is working out swimmingly for LA.
At this point, it looks like the Dodgers could've given the Red Sox absolutely nothing in return for Betts and we would've gotten to the same outcome.
