On Monday, longtime Yankees radio play-by-play announcer John Sterling passed away less than two years after his retirement. An outpouring of tributes followed, and you didn't have to be a Yankees fan to feel this tremendous loss.

Suzyn Waldman, Sterling's announcing partner of over two decades ("That's baseball, Suzyn"), eulogized him on WFAN. She and Michael Kay placed flowers on home plate ahead of the Yankees' game against the Orioles Monday night as Yankee Stadium observed a moment of silence. The players wore Sterling's initials on their caps, New York's Bleacher Creatures added him to their roll call. Even the Mets radio booth paid homage to the voice of their crosstown rival by calling the Mets' win in Sterling's signature style.

Dodgers fans tipped their caps to Sterling by recognizing his call of LA's 2024 World Series win, his last game before he retired.

Sterling was incredibly measured and complimentary, even as Waldman couldn't hide her disappointment.

"They are going nuts on the field, and I don't blame 'em. When you see them jump around like this, boy, there's reason for it. They deserve it. They erased a 5-0 lead tonight — Yankees helped — and the Dodgers win the ballgame. They are jumping around and celebrating as they should. They earned it."

Dodgers fans are remembering John Sterling for his class-act call of LA's 2024 World Series win over Yankees

Dodgers fans would never wish that game had gone any other way, but on a human level, we can acknowledge that it was a shame Sterling's last ever game was such a heartbreaker for New York. Still, he was classy until the end.

And Dodgers fans know how this one feels. Vin Scully passed away just a few years after he retired at the end of the 2016 season. Both Sterling and Scully had long histories with their teams, franchise icons whose voices were immediately recognizable without them needing to say much.

After their win on Monday, in which Aaron Judge hit his 14th home run of the season his first time up to the plate and the Yankees went on to crush the Orioles 12-1, the Yankees played a recording of Sterling's iconic "The Yankees win! Theeee Yankees win!" over their loudspeakers, which Judge said he hopes will become a fixed tradition in the Bronx.

Dodgers fans tip our caps to Sterling.
