Dodgers fans want team to make drastic decision with struggling Blake Treinen

And it might be the right one.

The Dodgers' failure to sweep the Giants on Sunday night was a result of a pair of breakdowns that fans are all-too familiar with. Emmet Sheehan pitched seven one-hit innings with 10 strikeouts for his third strong start in a row, but the Dodgers' offense only gave him a single run of support vs Giants rookie Trevor McDonald, who threw six innings in his first career start.

Blake Treinen took over for Sheehan in the eighth and was responsible for all three of the runs that would eventually give San Francisco the win. He gave up two singles and then a ground-rule double before recording his first out. The Dodgers intentionally walked Rafael Devers to load the bases, then Willy Adames walked in a run. Matt Chapman brought in the last runner of the inning with an RBI groundout.

Treinen was pulled and replaced by Alex Vesia, but he was eventually tagged with the loss — the fifth in his last seven outings.

Even though the Dodgers managing to clinch a postseason spot (and on the night of Clayton Kershaw's final Dodger Stadium start, no less) to alleviate some pressure, there's no question that the bullpen is still in terrible shape. Tanner Scott has borne the brunt of the responsibility for multiple bullpen collapses, but Treinen's struggles have been a relatively less discussed brewing disaster.

After Sunday's performance, calls to leave him off of at least the Wild Card roster ran rampant among fans.

The trouble really started in Baltimore, during Yoshinobu Yamamoto's spoiled no-hitter in the second game of the series. Scott is the pitcher who gave up the walk-off RBI single, but all of the runners on base were Treinen's responsibility.

He pitched a clean inning against the Rockies, then allowed an unearned run each in his next two appearances against the Giants and Phillies before surrendering a game-winning three-run homer to Weston Wilson the next night. In this most recent opener against the Giants, he walked his first batter and then walked in a run. And then there were the three runs he gave up on Sunday.

Dave Roberts said that his faith in Treinen remains "unwavering," but it's pretty clear to fans that the right-hander can't and shouldn't be trusted in even middle-leverage situations right now.

With Roki Sasaki, Brock Stewart, and Kyle Hurt all stalled in Triple-A after their rehab assignments came to a forced end with the conclusion of the Triple-A season, the Dodgers have plenty of options to turn to instead of continuing to let Treinen come in to blow games.
