While the Los Angeles Dodgers were expected to be at least moderate buyers at the trade deadline this year, they did have some expendable pieces on their roster they didn't mind moving. As ravaged as their pitching staff has been by injuries this season, it was becoming abundantly clear that Dustin May's time with the Dodgers was going to come to an end.

In addition to being a free agent after the season which instantly makes any player a trade candidate, May has struggled to return to the form that saw him establish himself as one of the more exciting pitchers to watch in baseball. In 19 appearances this season, May has posted a 4.85 ERA with 97 strikeouts in 104 innings of work.

Such a trade did indeed come to pass as the Dodgers just traded May to the Red Sox with just minutes to go before the trade deadline passed.

The trade details have yet to be revealed yet, but it is highly unlikely that the Dodgers got a hefty return from Boston for him, though early reports of prospect James Tibbs III being involved is a great sign. In addition to being a rental who hasn't been overly productive this season, the Red Sox likely were wary of investing too much in May given his injury history and the declines in his stuff that came afterwards. It also probably didn't help that everyone knew that the Dodgers wanted to move May and they had almost no leverage in negotiations as a result. That said, it does seem like Boston blinked and LA pulled the trigger.

For LA, this deadline is unfortunately something fans have come to expect from Andrew Friedman. While he will wheel and deal with the best of them during the offseason when prices are more fixed and not insane, Friedman does not like overpaying for players in trades and would rather stick with the roster he built with the deadline in mind most years.

The Dodgers did make some moves with Alex Call being a deadline addition, but it would have been nice to see them do a little bit more to reinforce this battered roster for the stretch run.
